CDI FILTER

Post by ohiojack »

How important is the cdi valve/filter for gas mileage? Ijust did a 100 mile loop at easy, low rpm ride, and I got 38 mpg. My fuel filter, air filter and plugs was changed out within 300 miles ago. The carbs was synched and injector cleaner ran through the bike. My cdi filter looks like the previous owner jb welded it back together at some time. My 2003 voyager would pull right at 50 mpg, but this 1998 is a gas hog in comparison :tho: I ordered a new valve/filter. A little pricy at 38.00 at the local Kawasaki dealer. ohiojack

It is attached to the vacuum line going to the cdi unit. The cdi unit is located ontop of the air filter box

Hi,ohiojack, good meeting you Sunday, .If the ignitor does not see cruise vacuum,it will not advance the ignition timing to the optimum point for good MPG.It works similar to the vacuum diaphrams on the distributors we used to see on the cars of the 50s,60s and some of the 70s.It keeps the ignition timing retarded at high throttle position,to reduce the possibility of detonation until the throttle is backed off, then with high manifold vacuum, thus low cylinder pressure,it advances the ignition timing to increase MPG.

Doing the type of driving you are talking about, 50 sounds correct, not 38. If it is the CDI unit, it will pay for itself pretty quickly.

40-45 mpg is more of a "average" mpg for the Voyager.

Before the 10% ethanol mix was mandated in Pennsylvania I was getting 45-55 depending on how I twisted the throttle but after the introduction of corn-gas mine dropped noticeably. If I'm very careful and easy on the throttle I can squeeze 42-45 but that's not the norm.
I've just grown to accept it and live with it.
