IGNITION CDI
I think I have finally found my low gas mileage problem. I took a trip to Mid-Michigan, around 200 miles one way. On the way up my gas mileage was 34.6 mpg. Oh by the way the plugs, air filter, gas filter, carb synched was all done within the last 1000 miles. Once I arrived, I double checked my vacuum line to the cdi unit. It seemed to take a awful lot of vacuum to cause the motor rpm to increase. I took some electrical cleaner and sprayed some in the vacuum port on the cdi. My next mpg check showed 40.0 mpg running at 75 mph. My question is do I have to use a cdi unit from the same year of bike?? I found a unit that came off of a 1987 voyager 1200 for 120.00. Will it work?? ohiojack

Re: IGNITION CDI
OK to use a unit with the last four digits ending -1248.
The 1986 and some 87 model years units ended with the last four digits -1179 do not use this one ,verify the last four digits before you buy it ! Some shady characters also have removed the "bad" digits and sold it....or attempted to put on the "good" numbers and sold it.
FOR EXAMPLE ...the two that I see currently running on ebay are BOTH the "bad" ones
one here states 86' 87' and no #s on unit is likely a bad one.
as the other one clearly states that it is p/n #11009 -1179. also the bad one.
some salvage yards that cannibilize bikes put everything that they can make another dollar on,up for sale !
I guess the old saying ..."let the buyer beware" applies here.

There should be an OEM part number on the CDI box I would think. You would think there would be a difference in numbers somewhere. Stamped in not just stickers.Lucasind wrote:OK to use a unit with the last four digits ending -1248.
