How not to do things PART 2

Post by ekap1200 »

Well another in what may be a series of what you don't want to see when you work on a bike . For the life of me I don't understand why a 2002 with only 27,000 on the odometer needed to have the fuel line replaced with a automotive line and hose clamp. It is beyond my understanding, but here it is and it made it to the " HOW NOT TO DO THINGS " list...
Now don't get me wrong, I would do what ever it takes to get me and the bike home if stuck 100 to 1000 miles from home. But some items are very specific to the machine they are on. Take this hose , from Kawasaki... It is one tough hose they spec out. Silicon, hose , with 2 different hose Inside Diameters.
And there is not a lot of room for it. Hit one large pot - hole with those super duper stock air shocks and the tanks fuel tube will be very close to hitting the swing arm as the shocks bottom out.
Put a larger dia. hose and a hose clamp facing the swing arm , and it WILL hit. The OEM hose cost me under ten dollars. Well :!! pictures in this show will tell the story.
Hope ya'll like part 2 of HOW NOT TO DO THINGS
OH, the fuel fill overflow hose had been folded when this was done also indicating that someone had this tank out at some point in time also.

:tho: yes I do Tony, plan A was to quickly change out the fuel line and have the tank and carb's back in this machine yesterday. Now its a gamble with the elbow. Just need to tweek it back enough to open it up some. After I took the pics of that FUBAR , I went for a ride.
It took, what seemed forever to gravity out the fuel first thing yesterday and I knew the term quick-job was not happening.... The top of the engine and the area around it was a mix of oil and grime from the vent hose being off for who knows how long. I had told the customer last month when I put the vent-hose back on that it would be a gamble to not have the carbs suck up what may have made it's way into the lower air box. And that the tank tube looked to be kinked. But that jobs main issue was the wiring rats nest's and parts falling off the bike. The last 3 bike jobs in the shop were caused by PO's or 90 dollar an hour shops. All costing the new owners a bag-full of money. And I have a 2010 Harley coming in , 2nd owner with a rats nest of electrical add on;s to get straitened out. Spent the rest of yesterday re-grouping and making more room in the shop. Followed by a Kaluha and orange juice.

Eugene how do you work in that tight space?? I commend you for being able to pull that off. I have to pull the wife's SUV out of the garage to do anything on the bike. I cannot get enough room. You must have a lot of skinned elbows.....

Well before I dis-able a bike from rolling on its tires, I pull my bike outside and work up by the garage door there is a fair amount of room to work on both sides of the bike. And usually one clear workbench under the shelfs on the front end of the table saw. On this job I did that first then backed it up to pull the tank. Up on the center stand , 4 bolts/rear-frame and bingo, out comes the tank. Which plan A was to go out and right back in with the tank. We will see today how that goes , when I go to bend the tank tube back in shape.
If I'm pulling an engine, or its a longer job, Well I either have to cover my bike outside or if it is the off-riding season here in NJ, I use a ramp and store my bike in one of the un-heated out buildings. :cold:
If I am doing any of the stainless trim work, and sanding, soft-wheeling, and buffing. I get every bike out of the shop, and fan-vent the crap outside towards the woods. The metal dust still gets everywhere after about half a day of that.
