when you open the link from Voyager55, change assembly illustration to the "Secondary shaft" and there you will see what is involved in the starter clutch assembly. In order to replace the starter clutch assembly, you will need to split the crankcases.
If the generator (starter) chain, and the chain tensioner assembly shown in the "Crankcase" illustration, need replacing as well, and both should at least be inspected and checked against specifications, then there is the additional job of removing the crankshaft as the chain is of the endless variety with NO master link and travels around the crankshaft. Major work unless one has the tools needed, all of the seals, gaskets and parts needed, etc., etc., etc..
It is oftentimes more expedient to swap out the "broken starter" engine with a known good starter assembly engine.
I would suggest contacting Mr. Carl Leo, voyagerparts@bellsouth.net for advice and parts. You will find it most enlightening to talk with him.

Hello Dan and welcome to the AVA, most here will agree with Dave. This is a most expensive job and very time consuming. Far less cost and time to swap out the engine. Carl Leo will know a ballpark number on just what the repairs and cost would be verses an engine in good shape.
Hard to imagine a 22 year old machine with only 12,000 on it. May be 112,000
Post a subject , "needing an engine" and there may be someone that has one in your area.

I have a 91 engine I just got with some parts bikes I would have to check it out first.
I was told it spins over with the starter but there are no carbs on it.

I just got it so let me clean it up and do a compression check.
37k miles sitting for a while
If everything checks out I will let it go for $200.00 + shipping.
Don't be afraid of replacing the engine, it fairly easy to do.
The first one I did I think took me approx. 3-4 hrs.
If you join the AVA I believe you can get access to a service manual, That will help you with the job.

Got a chance to check out the engine a little bit.
It has on carbs so I could not start it but holding my hands over the intake ports it really has good vacuum, sucks my hand really hard.
I have no reason to believe it won't run.
