Bluetooth headset?

Post by Tonyvdb »

So I'm interested in getting a headset, I'm currently using a 3/4 helmet and wonder what is a good unit that sounds good yet does not break the bank. I'm hearing that the Sena ones are good?

I was ready to sell my bike because of miscommunications with my spouse and her bike. This included one time where she was heading east on a divided hiway and I was heading west trying to find out what had happened to her (after I noticed she wasn't behind me), and after 2 times around (5 miles between crossovers), I finally just waited on the East bound side and she eventually showed up ("I had dropped my wrist rest thingy and tried to find it along side the road "crampbuster").
But the final straw was she was behind me just before the exit on our way home at the end of a Sunday ride, and then again she wasn't there (she hadn't been on her bike in awhile). By the 2nd light I pulled over and waited. Nothing. :hmm:
By this time I was worried and went back to find out what happened and half expected either she was broke down or worse. Nothing.
Finally I went home to wait and then call the hospitals(???????????????).
Sitting on a lawnchair in front of the house, there she was. "Oh no, I turned off and went around the neighborhood looking at the houses by the scenic slow route. When I got home i realized I had forgotten to bring my housekey or my phone (in the house) , so I waited outside :tho:
I walked over and got a "For Sale" sign I had bought for something else and put it on my bike. I couldn't go through that again.
Fortunately, I found the prices on the Sena bluetooth units as a pair had come down to what I could manage. Not perfect, but they have made traveling around the west manageable and enjoyable for the last three summers (more than 9k in the last two summer trips alone, plus at least three 2k rides the last 3 falls).
Issues: mic picks up road noise on her bike since hers is a Vulcan without the fairings (has a large windshield) and protection the Voyager has (would get her one if you thought she could handle it). Her bike also has loud pipes ("your not touching my pipes").
Overall, I would (and probably will) buy them again.
Enjoy,
Ken

Best units on the market are the UClear HBC200. You don't need a boom microphone, the sound is loud and clear and it can play your music from an Ipod or your phone via Bluetooth in HD. These can be daisy chained to link up to 7 units and broadcast up to a mile and half linked. I love mine. The Uclear will even link up to other brand sets.

Tony,
We have had the SENA units ever since Kanab. Got so frustrated with the Kawasaki factory rider intercom not working that I just sold the CB and all the headsets and various cables to another AVA member, got the Sena's and haven't looked back. I can talk reliably to my wife when on or off the bike (as long as we are wearing the helmets) batteries last an entire day of riding, (and can be plugged in to the bike's 12V system if they do go flat) and be recharged with the included wall charger at the motel over night. and best of all, I can link up with my ham radio (it has bluetooth) or even listen to music from wifes ipad clone or even the laptop in the trunk while we are traveling. It has multiple channels so wife can listen to music or use phone, while I can listen to my ham radio. If we want to talk to each other, just tap the "jog dial" on the side of the headset. Tap again to return to what you were listening to.

Only thing I have ever found to be bad about these sets is Sena's reluctance to sell you new batteries when the factory units give up the ghost. Found sites on ebay that sell the exact same battery for about $10. We have gotten a lot of use out of these sets... See this site for more info:

As always the help and quality of info from all of you is second to none. I found a great deal on the Sena SMH10 and grabbed it so I'll let you know what I think after using it.

Thanks
