Helmets for an oval shape head

Post by Tonyvdb »

So Im looking for a better fit helmet as the HJC IS33 that I currently use fits nice but the sides around my cheeks are a bit loose. If I go with a smaller size my forehead hurts after about an hour of riding and it leaves a mark when I took it off so I upped the size to an 2XL.

I know that the Arai helmets are designed for an oval head but they are so pricey. Ive been told that the Bell Revolver modular helmet is more oval but without trying its hard to know. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. My forehead peaks just a bit, and after a while that gentle pressure is like a Chinese water torture to me. We recently spent many hours trying on different helmets and I stumbled across the Fulmer 62B full-face with a drop-down shaded shield. It's the first comfortable helmet for me in a long time. Fits comfortably along my cheeks and also doesn't put any pressure on my forehead.
The Fulmer 75B 3/4 helmet also fits like the 62B and also has the same drop-down shaded shield. Unfortunately, the 75B has been discontinued, but there are a lot of them still around and not hard to find. My size is a 2XL, so it wasn't found anywhere in over a month of searching. S, M, L, XL are all readily available.
If you prefer a full-face, the 62B is a great helmet. $99 at Alter-Ego Motorcycle supply. It also has deep pockets for speakers and mic. Besides the internal drop-down shade, you can get a shaded main shield, too ($12).
Also, Fulmer helmets tend to run small, so every one of them that I tried on needed to be the 2XL instead of a normal XL.
The 62B has a vent deflector to push vented air up across the face shield. There are three other vent's too.

Not trying to diss any helmet choice, but three local dealers that offer several brands of the modular, flip-full-face helmets are not encouraging about the test results on them. They say that the flip fronts tend to break and then push into the face.
Personally, I can't see that happening any more than just a face shield breaking on a 3/4 helmet, though.
I have benefited from the extra protection of full-face helmets twice, so I am a "die-hard" full-face fan (pun intended!!). I have a scar on my chin from the less protection of the 3/4 helmets. Would never wear a 1/2 helmet!
FWIW, I'm seeing some of the Fulmer 62B helmets selling new on eBay for as low as $74.

are the Fulmer helmets good quality, never heard of them and they dont appear to have any sellers on line or otherwise in Canada.

I agree that the 3/4 helmets are not as good as a full face one but I feel claustrophobic in them and want the ability to open it up if I like without having to always take it off.

Fulmer has been making helmets since just after WWII, when racing really took of. Yes, they are good quality. Lots of them listed on eBay and Amazon. Of course, I much prefer to actually try on the helmet I will be buying before handing over my money. I waited until my local dealer got in a shipment of a couple hundred of them before picking one out that felt really good.

I've been wearing a Fulmer 3/4 with retractable sunvisor for years. I have a fairly oval head and this is the most comfortable helmet Ive ever put on. I keep looking and test fitting different brands and styles always looking for something different but have not found any as comfortable as the Fulmer for me.

Krasmu, did you get the 75B? I'm jealous! That's what I originally wanted, but couldn't find a 2XL.
Question #2; do you use a communication system on yours with the mic and two speakers? #3; If so, does it fit and work well with the flip shield?
#4; Has your inner shade worked well? I've never had a helmet with an inner shade and am concerned about how long it will keep working. We both noticed that the shaded inner shield doesn't really block out all bright light, especially down low, and ANY bright light will tire out the eyes, so we are picking up shaded main shields today for our 62B helmets. Hey, maybe together they will be dark enough to use as a welding helmet, too!

Ive got an HJC IS33 thats similar to the Fulmer 75b (it was rated the best 3/4 helmet of 2016) Ive had no issues with the flip down glasses and you can get many different shades and colors for them. My only issue is the fit as its not very oval shaped so I had to go a size larger than I like and its not snug around the sides as it should be hence my search for a modular helmet that has a more oval shape.

I should receive my Sena SMH10 headset this week and I will comment here on how it its if you like?

Went in to pick up my new shaded main shields today and tried on several helmets, one being the HJC 3/4 helmet. Yes, Tony, it is a bit round instead of oval, and it fit me just as you described. I tried on the 2XL and it felt good to my forehead, but then felt sloppy in the cheek area.
Now, I probably shouldn't say this, but my dealer told me to simply take my thumb and compress the styrofoam at the point where it presses against my forehead. So, an XL will fit better if I give it that slight depression where it bothers me after a while. TECHNICALLY, it voids the integrity of the helmet, but on such a small area I think it is inconsequential. So, tomorrow I am going back there to pick up an XL 3/4 HJC for summer riding.
Not sure how you feel about such things, Tony, but you might want to try the slight thumb depression trick to salvage an otherwise excellent helmet. I love the way they upholster those HJC's! And, they come with a DOT approved quick release, padded chin straps and velcro to help hold everything together. I'm impressed! All, for just $99.

Yes! Definitely want to hear about mounting, battery life, volume, clarity. Will it fit into a full-face helmet, too?

Ok, will do

On the HJC. It will be my hot weather riding helmet so will still be in use. I've ordered the Bell revolver evo as a second helmet for those cooler rides and will see what I like better. The place I buy from includes a return shipping label for hassle free returns if I don't like it here in Canada

The helmet says AF9B on the back. I just happened to try it on in my local shop one day and it fit so well, I bought it. Didn't even know anything about the brand. Yes, I use the sunshade nearly every day and it has performed great. It comes down almost to my nose. I love that I have no need to wear sunglasses which for me at least are always getting pressed into my nose. Can't handle that for long. My helmet is 7 years old and both the clear face shield and the inner sunshade are relatively scratch free and in perfect operating condition. I've never had a headset or inner speakers so I can't say to that. It does have a pretty fair amount of space available for them though.

I have been using Scorpion helmets they have an air pump in the chin guard to inflate the cheek pading.
Good quality but they run on the small size.
also that Bell Revolver helmet I got one of them about 3-4 years ago I have not wore it.
I was disappointed with the quality, it seems vary cheaply made.
They may have changed them since then.

Been looking for a full face that fits as well as my current 3/4 Fulmer for those cold weather months. I tried on the Bell revolver and was happy with the fit just didn't have the money the day I was in there. Will go back when time allows to try it again. A helmet is one thing I don't want to order off line unless I've tried it on and know the exact model and size. Don't want the trouble of retuning it.

My understanding is yes, the revolver has gone through two upgrades since its first release in 2011. They addressed the noise level around the chin and the seal at the top of the visor is better. They also fixed the inner shade mechanism.
Ill post my thoughts on it once I get it.

I have a Fulmer flip up that I have had now for about 3 years. I almost never wear it except in winter. Like Trikebuilder wearing it is like Chinese water torture as well. I have a Fulmer open face with a flip shield that I find comfortable with no headband issues. I used to have a French made Lazer helmet, full faced that I loved when I had the ZRX. It was so comfortable. I have never found another one after the foam deteriorated and I wish I still could. I don't even think they sell them in the states anymore. I don't know what "shape" my skull is but I know what is and isn't comfortable.

Ok, an update:

I ended up returning the Bell helmet as it did not fit any better than my HJC IS33 so it looks like my search is still on for that perfect fit. On the bright side I do like my HJC although its a bit loose on the sides around my cheeks just wanted something with better chin protection.

As for the Sena SMH10 headset I ended up getting a bad unit (from eBay) looked like it had been a used or returned unit but the mic did not work at all. Just received a brand new Sena 10S (the SMH10s upgrade) And on the one trip Ive used it all I can say is excellent so far. The speakers are so clear even at highway speed of 75Mph had no issues hearing my wife and she said it was better than our SUVs built in Bluetooth system. The phone app is a really nice feature allowing all setup options to be done with the app rather than the Sena its self. Even connecting to other brands of headsets are said to be simple with the app.
