Cruise Control Question

Post by billgillin »

Recently my cruise stopped working completely on my 94 XII. Before I take everything apart in search of the cause I hope for a little insight from anyone here on AVA. The symptom is no green light on the power indicator. I have the service manual. Any thoughts on where I should start testing? What side of the fairing comes off to service it? What else needs to come off to service. All help will be greatly appreciated. :please:

First of all welcome aboard the AVA

A common problem that seems to cause the cruse not working is a dirty or stuck micro switch on either the clutch or break handles (or at the rear break pedal) Take some electrical contact cleaner and give them a good spray (micro switches are located just where the leviers attach at the hinge point).

Just a note: the cruse wont work unless in 5th gear

Is it the light that comes on when you turn switch on or the light that comes on when you "set" the cruise?

Bill welcome!
In addition to being in 5th gear and turning on the cruise before using the set button (right thumb) make sure your speedo is also functioning. The speedometer controls the gauge, turn signal cancelation, auto volume advance and cruise control also, if the speedo is not working none of the rest will work.

Which green light are you talking about? there are 2 of them on the cruise council. The right one (power light) should come on after pushing the "on" button, any time the key is on. This only powers up the system, but unless you are in 5th gear and above 45 mph the cruise will not "set". If you have no "power" light, I'd start by checking fuses and wire connections under the false tank. If you are talking about the left green light (Cruise set) then I'd start with cleaning the micro switches and making sure the speedo is working properly and that you are trying to set it while rolling at 45 or better in 5th gear. I've also heard "but not sure about this one" that the OD light on the dash that comes on in 5th gear must also be on for the cruise to work. Maybe somebody else on this forum can verify that one.

Welcome to the forum and good luck.

If the ON light comes on, and stays on, then you're getting power to the system.
If the SET light won't come on when you push the SET switch on the handlebar, then something is preventing the control unit from engaging.
Check:
-switch at clutch
-switch at hand brake
-switch at foot brake
-switch on carb rack
-OD light is on, and bike is in 5th gear, going between 40 and 80 mph.
The final ingredient is the Distance Sensor located behind the meter cluster. If your turn signals cancel, or if your radio volume increases with speed, then the Distance Sensor is working. BTW, my signals DONT cancel and my radio volume DOESNT change, but my CC still works.
Good luck,
Tim

Thanks for all the responses! Not sure the cause but it started working today. I think it's in a harness connection somewhere.
The right "power on" light was not coming on. I have owned the bike for 15 years and am aware of the common required items and common things. Something caused the "no power" when power button is pressed on the tank console.

Do any of the power wires go through the large harness on the left side? The harness that has caused so many issues for us.

Yes, Cut out the 10 pin connector and hard wire it i.e. Solder and heat shrink and all your electrical problems will go away. I had the same issue. Kept swapping relays to fix but it would come back until I cut out that pesky connector. Never a problem since going on 2 years now.
