Tire Ply seperation

Post by Neal »

It finally happened to me. I had a Metzler 888 develop a separation at only 15,970 miles. That's just a little over half worn. :gmad:
I've been thru at least a dozen or so 880s over the years and never had a problem.

Nothing happened to the bike. No instability or handling or anything like that. It just felt out of balance and made a 'slapping' noise, like a piece of rubber was hitting the pavement. No tread ever came off the tire. No cupping, feathering, or such. Matter of fact you can't see anything wrong when looking at the tire. Looks like it's about 1/2 worn. :hmm:

I thought you said you had a car tire on your bike.

Yes, on the back I have a Federal. The front was a Metz 888.

The 2003 I bought last spring had Metzler 880's on it. Noticed tread separation on the rear coming back from Mississippi to NY. About half worn. Kept an eye on it, but felt no ill affects. Put E3's on when I got home. Had a set of 880's on my Vstar and wore them out with no issues.
