Another toy!

Post by trikebldr »

All I was doing was looking through Craigslist for trailers to pull behind my sidecar rig. That's all! Nothing more than trailers! Honest!

Then,.....there is was, jumping off the screen and running right over me, pipes blaring loudly under all that gold and black/burgundy paint. Kinda made me wonder what my 1300 Voyager might have looked like as a teenage kid as it was growing up!

Yes, the engine has been repainted with a slightly brighter-than-stock gold color, but I like that. Also, being an '82, it was the burgundy version as opposed to the champagne version option. Only available in '82 and not very common. Of course, the Vetter fairing was added, and may not stay in place. I will ride it a while before deciding. After all, my purpose or this bike is for local short runs and a few bugs won't kill my diet! The seller has all of the original equipment for it, except the passenger grab rail that goes around behind the seat. I found one on eBay already.
The pipes look OK for it's age, but somebody painted flat black over the factory black chrome. My sandblaster also does ceramic coatings, so I will see if his material can withstand exhaust temps and maybe have him coat the whole exhaust. Otherwise I may just have Jet Coatings do them in their permanent ceramic coating.
The rear tire shows a need for replacement, but I'll use it up with a few burnouts, first.
It has a super-soft seat that feels like a gel padding. Not stock at all. Wondering if it might be a Russel,.........?
An interesting feature of this 1982 Kawasaki KZ1100D Spectre is it's center stand. Once it is lowered to hold the bike up, it has a key lock to lock it in the down position for anti-theft.
Bike has 35,583 miles. Started right up even when stone cold to my hand. Owner said it hadn't been run in almost a month now, and he wanted me to see how it acted like that. He thought it was a bit more temperamental when cold than it should be, but with carbs instead of fuel injection I thought it did quite well until it warmed up. With choke on it fired up immediately. No smoke, even when goosed hard.
I had him ride it back and forth in the street for me to listen to, but I never feel comfortable riding anybody elses bike, so I didn't ride it. I sat on it and tried all the controls with the engine running and all was fine. Rear wheel had very little overall gear slack with the engine in first gear and on the center stand. That's a REALLY good sign! So many KZ's are driven so hard it wears the driveline loose.
Only two small scratches in the paint and both are on the black sections, so that will be easy to fix.
The left handlebar does appear to be slightly higher than the right side, so it must be bent upward slightly. The owner didn't even notice it until I pointed it out (or,.....DID he? Heh, heh, heh!), but I guess I'm just a bit OCD about such things. No big deal,........it can easily be bent back down without any damage.
Brake rotors are in excellent shape with lots of beef left. Pads are about half gone.
The Spectre was Kawasaki's response to the Yamaha 1100, and both bikes were little hot rods with factory loud pipes. It has a nice gentle rumble until the throttle is moved at all! Then, I just hope there aren't any cops around! And, those are the stock, factory installed pipes! Just about the opposite of what my 1300 Voyager sounds like!
Another guy was supposed to show up to see the bike and possibly buy it today, but he never did, so when the owner called I was there within the hour and I gave him $200 to lock the deal. Will give him the rest when I go pick it up next Wednesday. Cindy and I took the sidecar rig to go see it today, so I couldn't ride it home. Of course, we sat and talked bikes for a long time. He just bought a Honda Valkyrie, so I had to drool all over it, too. It has Cobra straight pipes, so it was even louder than this little 1100 Spectre!
When I get the Spectre home I will be lining up my two Voyagers next to each other again and will pose this new little guy in front of them. With the same paint scheme it really does look like an adolescent 1300 Voyager without its last two "undescended cylinders"!!!

Very Nice!!! Brings back fond memories for me as I had a 750 version of this. I bought it brand new in 1984 as a carry over and put a Windjammer fairing on it also. Got an adjustable backrest/ luggage rack and highway pegs and I was ready for the road. Took that bike on a trip from Minnesota to Black Hills, Yellowstone and on to the west coast, though Yosemite, Colorado and back home. Loved that bike as it was different looking. Bike was very fast and had no problem keeping up with the Suzuki 850's my buddies had. Got rid of it in the late 80's when the kids stated coming, but always king of regret selling it. Enjoy that bike!!!

Looks great ! I remember the rear "grab rail " that is missing from your bike , they were really different from previous KZ grab rails , having a nice cushion feel to them ! I just got back from PIB island, having been there since last week, riding the "fairing/windshield LESS " csr 650 around for days ,, I would not remove the vetter if it were mine, I guy sure gets used to the benefits of having that front protection ! again ...nice bike and enjoy riding a much lighter bike ! ..................Tony :-D

yes that brings back memories of my 78 KZ650. had the same fairing with Dennis Kirk touring King/queen seat, highway pegs, backrest and much more. did the trip around the lower great lakes on it. that bike loved to have the front wheel off the ground more than on. :devl

I read that twice on other forums about this, and all of the 1100 versions! I guess if I, and the bike, were younger, I might be prone to doing that, too, but I intend to keep this one for a long time. All of the vids I've watched of these shows them being wrung out awfully hard.

Mike, I also saw a 500cc version of this bike on Craigslist while browsing. Was wondering if the 500 has a smaller frame, or if most frame parts will fit both. Any idea? I found the passenger grab bar for a 500 on eBay, but none for the 1100. I can imagine that the 750 would have the same frame as the 1100, but the 500 would just be lost in the 1100's frame. I almost bought the 500, too! Same condition and paint scheme.

I watched a vid on YouTube by a dealer who has this bike, but not for sale. He also had to find a stock grab rail for his and it needed to be touched up on the gold band across it's top edge. It struck me as a very nice little detail to add to a mostly brutal bike! Even the two grab bars on my Voyagers don't have such details!
Just because of yours, Tony, I almost bought a Kaw 650, but it was a bit too rough for my likes! And, he wanted $1300 for it, when all I paid was $1850 for this one.
Would you happen to remember from your Kaw wrenching days if the 1100, 750 and 500 versions of this bike had the same frames, or at least could interchange some parts? I can't find that grab bar for the 1100, but found one for the 500.
I was very shocked at how light this bike felt as I wagged it side-to-side just standing there. It will be a breeze to ride around town. Hell, I might even take Cindy riding on it, too!

I believe it would actually be a 550, not a 500. I had a new 550 LTD the year before i got the Spectre. I believe that it has a smaller frame. I had the fairing on the 550 also and road that to Yellowstone and up Pikes Peak. Was a great bike, but only road it 1 year as the mountains beg for a little more power and I loved not having to adjust and lube a chain anymore when i got the Spectre 750. Did a 1,000 mile ride from Colorado Springs back home in 24 hours on that 550. I wouldn't do it today, but is amazing what you will do when only 20 years old.

YES, they do!
This is definitely not a bike to present on a long distance, comfortable touring forum! I will be wearing good ear plugs and a full-face helmet with the shield pulled down all the time when riding this bike. And these are factory original mufflers! I think part of the bike's speed comes from the extra push the noise gives it as it leaves the pipes!
The seller went on vacation for the last three weeks before my payment could get to him, so I finally picked it up today and did the 30 mile drive home on it. "Fast and loud", like the TV show!
Rear brake caliper needs a better bleeding, just a bit too soft. Typical. Once cylinder on the right side seems to be pulling harder than the others as the exhaust note tells me. Needs to be sync'd better. Speedo sticks on 40 until you hit about 70, then it gets erratic. Vetter fairing's windshield is fractured all around all of the mounting bolts. Looks like somebody used just a tad too much torque on those plastic bolts! The gas tank looks brand new inside! Not a hint of rust, but nice, shiny bare steel! Gotta be a NOS replacement for the original! I've never seen a 34 year old tank look this clean!
Otherwise, WOW! Handles like a toy rocket compared to my 1300 Voyagers! This one will be daily fun, even if I do lose my hearing!
Lucasind, these bikes show 4200rpm at 70mph, too! Only difference, these redline a bit higher and don't sound like they are screaming like the 1300 six!
