Broken Voyager away from home
Edit: 6/1/16
Back home safe and sound.
Thanks AVA for your hospitality and help,
Terry, Gene, and k5rider.
Hi, my name is David /k5rider. I have a friend that recently bought a 1993 Voyager.
He did everything right, maintenance, tires, fluids, new bulbs.... and went on a few long rides. He is currently on an Iron Butt Association ride. From Oklahoma City,OK, they did a Saddle Sore 1000 to El Paso, TX. 1000 miles in 24 hours. They slept one day then started a Border to Border IBA ride.
Mexico to Canada in 36 hours. Now they are heading home and his alternator has gone out.
He's been surfing your forum for some time but hasn't joined. He ask me to join and ask if any one near Aberdeen, South Dakota could sell him the parts or point him in the correct direction.
They bought another battery with the plan to remove all the fuses not needed to run the bike and drive on the batteries to a Kawasaki shop.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
His name is Terry Taylor.
Cell number is 405- 664- 4600
Edit:No answer on the cell phone, so I'm guessing they are on the move driving on batteries.
Thanks k5rider aka David

You can click to view.

The reason that your pic would not post is that it is the wrong size. Yours is 564 pixels wide by 800 pixels high. The requirements to post a pic are no larger then 900 pixels wide by 640 pixels high. The one I posted is 600 Pixels wide by 640 pixels high. Hope that helps you under stand why it would not post.

Re: Broken Voyager away from home
Jim,
Thank you for your efforts, I know Terry and Gene appreciate the contact.
I did resize the photo but obviously not enough, although I've never had an issue posting one of my pictures with my off site host, PhotoBucket. I have better resizing software on my home computer.
I would have been on this ride but I'm doing a 4 seasons ride, an IBA ride on the first day of each season. I can tell you the Winter solstice is the hard one.
I tried a BunBurner Gold 1500/24 but severe weather in Mississippi turned me around and I settled for a SaddleSore 1000/24.
Thanks again, I'll give an update when I hear from them.

Re: Broken Voyager away from home
I don't know if this helps but on the dollar for dollar page of the AVA it lists a Ken Heming in Merryville, Il. who rebuilds alternators. He is supposed to carry replacements in stock. His email is hemi-roid@frontier.com. If nobody can get you a replacement, there is always the chance he can send you one wherever you are.

Re: Broken Voyager away from home
Any reputable Alternator repair shop can rebuild a Kawasaki Voyager 1200 Alternator. They may not be able to bench test due to no pully, but can static test.
I have had a couple repaired at a local Alternator/Automotive Electrical shop with great results.
Anyone check to see if Carl had one?

Re: Broken Voyager away from home
I got a text at 1 a.m. that they had made it home. The guy at the motel had a charger to charge the bikes battery, with a full charge they drove to a town with a Wal-Mart. He purchased a marine battery, strapped it to the back seat, ran 10 gauge wire to the bike battery and off they went. During a late lunch next to a body shop they got the batteries charged while they ate. Terry only ran an led running light for the front light and he had one of those lights you wear on your head for a tail light. With the exception of the break down it was a great trip I was told.
Thanks AVA for your hospitality and help,
Terry, Gene, and k5rider.

Any time you can make it home under your own power is a good ride.
