What's the game?

Post by trikebldr »

I listed my '81 Suzuki GS650G for sale on Craigslist. I said it has no title and missing headlight and front turn signals, so it is mainly for parts or salvage.
Within the first 1/2hour I got four texts asking if I still have the bike for sale. I replied "Yes.", but never heard more from any of them. Since then, in the last five days I have received about two dozen more texts, "Still got the bike?" from different numbers. I never hear any more after replying "Yes."
What's the game they are all playing? Am I missing something here? Why do they ask if they don't go any farther? Only three people have actually asked more about it and one has looked at it but doesn't have the money. Wants to pay me $10/mo for almost 2-1/2 years!
I know CL is a crazy place to deal with people, but so many just alike?

trikebldr, I use craigslist to sell stuff alot and most of those do you still have the bike or the whatever end up being spam. I'm surprised you have not gotton the I'll send you the money if you ship me the vehicle after you recieve the funds. I also ask them to email me their phone contact info for more information
I will usually put that I will not ship or accept payments Cash only and must meet in a public place.
Not sure if that helps but just a tip.

I DID get something like the "ship after getting funds". He said he will send me a certified check in my name and after I get it and it clears my bank he will arrange for delivery of the bike. He asked for my name, address, cell. I know not to fall for that one, but I still don't understand what asking if I still have it does for anybody.
But, I will take your suggestion and ask them for more of their info. For the last two I have just replied "Maybe!". Maybe I should just reply "WHAT bike?".

Most of the text replies from Craigslist for items above $100. will usually say 'is it still for sale?'
and then request that you reply via email to some email address.

They are fishing for email addresses to send spam to.
Just don reply, you won't hear back from them

I agree it is probably someone or multiple someones fishing for email addresses. I am sure you've heard of people spoofing phone numbers. Well see if any of you have had this one. I bought new house phones over a year ago. Love these things because among their functions they can block tons of individual phone numbers. Not long after I got the phone I started blocking spam calls and numbers from solicitors and political interests. One day I got a call and when I looked on the caller ID it was me. My home phone number was calling me. I took the call and nobody was on the other end. I hung up and figured it was some kind of glitch. later on in the week when I checked the call report I found out I had called me no less than 8 times. Before all was done I had to block my own phone number to stop the madness. Now I have gotten spam from my own email address but never have I had to block my own phone to stop the harassment.

Now that, Mr. Jensee, is truly bizarre to have to block one's own phone number. Who could have imagined that.

Mike, we won't worry too much about you until you do a search to find out where you live, then go kick your own butt!

One of the first guys to ask about if the bike was still available called again today after four days. He asked the same thing, but never went any farther. I asked why he kept asking then would run away. he said because his boss was watching and he has limited text ability. I just told him BS and that HE wouldn't get the bike.
So much to-do over a $300 parts bike! Now I'm thinking of keeping it and putting it back on the streets for myself. Headlight, front turn signals, rear tire, clean the carbs, tuneup and it's good to go.

I have had many an opportunity to kick my own butt but unfortunately old age limits my flexibility. Keep the bike.
