Changed battery and starter engages when I try to connect neg post

Changed battery and when I try to install negative post; the starter engages and post really gets hot. Any ideas/ Thanks.

my thoughts are that the battery is low on charge and the starter relay is hung up.

If you don't hear the starter clicking when you hit the negative terminal on the battery with the negative post your relay is hung up and constantly sending voltage to the starter. Tap the relay a few times with a wrench or the backside of a screwdriver and see if it frees up. If not replace the relay.
