Hi All,
New to the forum, My name is Rex and I'm in Crystal River Fl. I ride a Victory Cross County Tour.
I picked up a 1989 voyager for a friend. The bike had been sitting for a while so the carbs were gummed
up. It would still start and run and actually ran fairly well other than the gas over flowing from gummed
up float needles.
I have done the carbs on my old GL1100 and my Old V-65 magna before so I dove into the voyager and did
a good cleaning. bench checked for leaks and glad I did, the center 2 carbs still over flowed. center carb needle
were at 17 mm and the outer one were at 18 mm so per one of the tech articles on this forum I set them all to
18 mm. No more leaks on the bench.
The problem is now I can start the bike and it Idles but only with the enrichners on and as soon as
I give it any gas it dies. I have blocked off the vacuum port that go to the emission equip to make sure
there was no vacuum leak there. With the bike Idling I can spray starting fluid around the carb boots and no change in Idle.
Hoping someone can tell me what to look for, Its probably something easy I missing.
Thanks for Any Help.
Rex

First of all welcome to the group and thank you for being a dues paying member, having your name appear in "green" is what pays for this forum to exist .
I read your post about carb problem of no idle unless fuel enrichment circuit is opened , you did not mention if you removed and cleaned the pilot ( idle) jets ? they are the small jets, very tiny fuel passage way responsible for idle . also under a plug you will find a pilot screw ...all these must also be cleaned to get proper operation.

Re: Carburetor Issue
I did not pull the pilot jets, I removed the temper proof caps and seated one and tried to pull it
but about 3/4 of the way out it felt like it was going to strip so I reseated and set it back the the
amount of turns it was set to. I did make sure that I could spray cleaner thru the passages in the
carbs and it would come out of the pilot jets very well. The bike idles pretty good, except the
enrichners are on. just can't give it any throttle.

Re: Carburetor Issue
If the warmed up motor will NOT idle without the enricheners on, try this: while warmed up, idling WITH the enricheners on, wind in the idle speed control knob until the idle starts to speed up and then see if you can substitute an increase in idle speed for a decrease of the enricheners position. The more you speed up the idle the more you move the enricheners to the OFF position. Eventually the idle speed should sustain without any enrichener, albeit at a high speed which then can be reset to around 950+/- rpm. Of course this will only work if all the "idle" settings/passages/jets are clean and clear.
Sometimes after a cleaning/rebuild the original "warmed engine" idle speed gets altered and the enricheners end up compensating for the too closed butterfly plate position.
If you get the idle fixed up and it still won't accept throttle then there may be an issue with the throttle plate , such as a tear of the diaphragm or mis-seating on the top of the carburetor, or the needle it controls has fallen out of it's clip.
From your description of the problem it sounds as though there is still something amiss and hopefully it is only adjustments. If not then there still is/are internal blockage/s and you may need to ultrasound clean the carb body/ies.
Also, as a suggestion you may already have performed, the entire fuel storage/delivery system should be purged, cleaned and reassembled with a new filter to avoid negating all the work you have done thus far to the carburetors.
Just a thought,
Dave
