Radio Volume

Post by sgilbert14 »

My radio seems to work ok except that the volume is very low. I ride with a 3/4 helmet and lose any chance of hearing it once I hit about 30 mph. Is this normal or could the amp or something be bad? Thanks

Chances are you do not have the controls set correctly on the face of the radio.

Check mute button on your handlebar controller or passenger controller and make sure it is out and not pushed in. If pushed in turn down your volume before you release it. Ask me how I know! Ouch on the ears and ouch for the speaks.

Twice it's happened to me and both times it was the passenger controls/mute, it got pushed while opening the trunk! No problem just push it again to test it!!!!!

Re: Radio Volume Speaker Upgrade

Post by sgilbert14 »

Now that I have things working I spent a few hours on the bike yesterday. The radio is loud enough now but the sound quality, well, not that good. Has anyone have some suggestion for speaker upgrades? I think that these are 4" speakers and I am thinking about a 2-way marine if I can find them...

Several on this forum have upgraded theirs to the Pioneer TS-A1072R 4-Inch 3-Way 150-Watt Speakers. Although doesn't state, am told they are reasonably water resistant.

Cost is under $50 a pair.

Well, I guess there is a good thing about having hearing only in my left ear and that is I had no clue that none of the right speakers are working. UGH.. Got my new speakers in and found that out when I went to test the right speaker out... no sound. Unplug the left and plug the speaker into that plug and it works. Turned the speakers to only the back and again no right speaker... Now right/left controls on the radio so does this mean???? yup, radio repairs? Ugh

Yup, radio doesn't have left to right balance controls. Might be worth exhausting the wiring from radio forward. Verify switches and wiring at rider's left handle bar and pillion remote, before digging into the amp. I am currently installing lower cost Pioneer TS-G1045R coaxial speakers versus the recommended Pioneer triaxial speakers. In addition to front pair I have now, just ordered the rear pair for $20 from Amazon. They are rated at a slightly higher 210 Watt peak versus triaxial 150 Watt peak. When I get done will give a report. They are also water resistant.

Will know further when they are installed, will give a report. One thing I was lacking and got was small stick on foam insulation tape roll for the speaker back. OEM had it, these don't and to provide proper sound separation of front from back (prevents sound cancellation) need the insulation.

It may very well be the power am has gone cold solder..
Very common..
Also the Fader control will sometime partially burn out or the track will get dirty..
If you wort the Fader (post 1986 models) from rear to front a few times, it may come back..
If not then the power amp is held in place under the right glove box (sat on the bike) .
Open the glove box, place a long screwdriver on the mounting bolts and rap it sharply with a hammer.. Not to hard else you will crack the glove box..
If the channel comes back , great, but it will go again..
If you remove it, send it to me and I will fix it for you .. If you want to send the radio too for any upgrades/mods then let me know..
Details are in my Sig..

I ended up going with these for the speakers:

Bazooka MCC4002
200W Peak (160W RMS) 4" 2-way Motorcycle Speakers for Honda Gold Wing and Yamaha Venture

https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_23 ... C4002.html

So far I am happy with them and they are listed for motorcycel and marine use
