Oil leak around water pump

Post by newnanvyg »

I've had my 1996 Voyager 1200 for about 12 years and never had an oil leak. I do most of my own work- clutches, carbs etc., but this problem has me stumped. It suddenly started to leak so I replaced the seal and re-installed the water pump. Held for a few days and started leaking again. Would appreciate any help and tips.

When I did my seal, with the experiences I have had doing farm tractor repair part time for 50 years,I used blue locktite to seal the oil from leaking between the seal and the water pump housing.I have found that some of the seals I have replaced were not from seal wear/failure,but from an imperfect fit on the outside of the seal. :oh:

Hi Cushman Eagle,
Sorry to hear about your oil leak. All I can say is when I did mine, Carl told me to epoxy the seal into the oil pump. He helped me through the whole
job with advice. i was told by doing that the seal can't walk up the shaft when it is spinning. i can't remember the mileage when I replaced it with out looking in my log book but it was awhile ago. no leaks, everything is fine. bike has 103,687 miles on it no drops of anything under it.ya watch now that I printed that it will start to leak from somewhere. Hope my tid bit helps you. GOOD LUCK!

Thank you lockwood for your statement, but it was not the VXII that I learned on ,I only changed that seal once,it was my learning curve working on farm equipment, where I found the outer side of the seal to leak that got me to seal the outer side every time I install a seal. That experience was what got me to locktite my VXII seal when I first changed it,and it has been dry since :woohoo:
