Installing Dyna coils

Suddenly my bike was a bit hard to start and sometimes could stop between shifting gears, I’m thinking the coils have done their job. Hopefully my new Dynatek coils will make the difference.

Man, what a difference Easier to start and the engine runs so smooth. It was not a "walk in the park" to install those dyna coils. It needed some modification to mount and a lot of time. But that's all forgotten now :-)

Took a test ride and before the engine was completely warm, it did stops between shifting gears. When the engine revived the right temperature it was not a problem anymore. Is it possible that the side stand switch can cause this problem? Where to start checking?

There's a connector for the side-stand switch near the lower left front side of the battery. Disconnecting the connector will tell you if the switch is the problem.

There's a connector for the side-stand switch near the lower left front side of the battery. I can't remember which is the male and female part of the connector but disconnecting the connector and inserting a jumper in the harness side will tell you if the switch is the problem.

That does not sound like a side stand problem .Sounds more you need to keep the cold idle advance up a little longer or maybe just turn the idle up a hair . When you let off the throttle the idle drops so fast it will stall the engine . Of course letting out the clutch in the next gear restarts you .

Thanks Me again, you were right. When I adjusted the idle, the problem disappeared. Took the bike out for a long ride, and it everything is good

Now in retrospective, this was just a early symptom of a bad alternator. The language of an motorcycle engine, is not easy to understand. It doesn’t have a lot of vocabulary. But I’m learning (slowly) :-)

My 1984 six takes a long time to warm up.. starts good but doesn't want to idle on choke for several minutes. could this be a coil issue as well? Once warmed up she runs nice and smooth, idles good. If coils would help, where did you get them and are they expensive? I would have thought with the warm temperatures it would be quicker to settle down... but even after a few hours it takes a while. I usually end up driving away with the choke on for an extra mile or so as it may stall if the choke is off at a stop light/sign. 62,000 KMs (40,000 miles or so)

... you might also consider Iridium plugs, when I put mine in, it ran like a new one!!!!

Not sure if I understand. So I just have to ask you some questions :-). When cold engine, it’s starts right up? Easy to start? But stalls unless the fast idle level is all the way up?

Have you tried to adjust idle speed? It’s a adjusting screw under the injectors. Not far from the fast idle level.

If that don’t work then It could be coils (and a lot of other things to) but my best advice for you is to start troubleshooting. Do you have the service manual? The manual explain how to check your electric system, coils and so on.

You will need a multimeter for this.

I bought my coils on Ebay, around 280$. You can find some Accel coils kit on Ebay. Think they are good to. But before you go that way do the troubleshooting :-)

Can you send some more photos of the coil install and what you had to modify to get them in place?

Dyna makes good stuff. I had Dyna coils on the Suzuki 1000. I also replaced the points with a Dyna ignition that never failed to start the bike with a touch of the starter button. Good stuff. Well worth the money.

samchar12 Sorry, I don’t have any more pictures from the installation. And now the engine is out of the frame, I’m doing a complete overhaul.
