January Daydreams

Post by Steverides5 »

Reading Gene Kap’s comments made me want to get the bike out. Hoping for Sunday as the high of 42 and partly cloudy is good enough for me.

That said most of my maintenance stuff gets done in early spring as I have an unheated garage and too many bikes to move around in there to work. Many of us spend the cold months looking at magazines and maps scheming our plans for 2019.

My personal plans for 2019 are June in Summerville with a bunch of you and coming down Skyline Dr on the weekend before the rally. September in Maine with the Rolling Through America group. Also planning several days prior to the meet in Maine touring through NY,NH,VT and visiting a friend in Maine. Not to mention my usual day tripping in NE Pennsylvania and NY State on weekends. Hoping for fair weather for this.

What is on your collective bucket lists for 2019

I would bet you went out today. Was much better today with that bitter wind gone for a day and clear skies. :-D I know the Retreads were more than likely to be out today. Those guys like to ride......every chance they get....

bucket list for me is touring around the Ohio river after the rally looking for someplace other than N.J. to retire. Taking off for 2 weeks come rally time. Then another week towards the end of summer for the MAV's annual ride in. Twisty roads are always a bucket list ride for me. If it is a twisty road its on my bucket list. The only other place I would like to see come time to retire are the giant redwoods. It has been a lifelong place I just have to see. And the West Coast States once I can have a few weeks of no work .

We will be riding soon as time seems to be flying along.

Gene;
There are many sights to see in the west. Less than 50 miles from my home in Sacramento, You can ride in the gold country, see all of the old mines, see cities like Grass Valley, and Nevada City, both look pretty much the same way they did in the late 1800's.
100 miles to the west, you come to the largest ocean on the planet. 100 miles north, you come to the giant redwoods, Oregon is just a day's ride from Sacramento, then Washington State. We in the NorCal voyagers have ridden from the Canadian border to the Mexican border (or close to it!) From the Ocean to the mountains, to the deserts of California, Utah, Nevada and beyond. lots of great places to see in this country.

I have always thought that a rally in Big Sur, Monterey Bay, or just anywhere along the coast would be the best rally yet.
Come to California, we have over 900 miles of coastline, we'll ride anywhere with you anytime.

Hey Gene, unfortunately didn’t ride Wednesday as I must work. Riding with the Retreads is a Sunday only venture for me.( hoping for this Sunday). I hope you post some Ohio RiverValley pictures whenever you get back. I’ve heard about it but never been. I’ve seen a few magazine shots at most. Not even too far from home.

Gene just sayin that you need to retire in a no income tax state. NJ, New York, California and Louisiana you need to stay away from, settling down I mean.

Here is a daydream for today.....just being outside....19 deg with a 2 deg wind chill. Today I would not care how much it costs to heat the house. And it may get cooler once the sun goes down. Door locks were frozen, brakes had frozen up to the pads, tires had flat spots frozen into them for a few miles. I don't think the shop heaters at work ever shut off. I can't imagine what you northers had as weather today but today should have been spent at home near a cozy fire place. Did not see one bike out today,,,

I do not think it got above 0 here at all today :cold: All the schools in NE Ohio seem to have been closed due to the heavy wind and low temp.
Sometime I should be able to get back on the VXII :hmm:
The last I was on it was 1-6-19.

:cold: Woke up yesterday to an official -27 degrees, no riding for me. Yes, we did stay inside next to the fireplace. Our last ride was about 75 miles on Jan 5. Thermometer at my house read -33 this morning. These are good days to get out the atlas and plan the coming summer road trip(s). :woohoo:

It hasn't gotten nearly that cold here 30 to 46 degree average these last several days. It is still too cold for me take the bike out, however I do go out and start it once a week and let it run a while. We installed a completely new AC heating system a little over a month ago. Electricity bill will be low but so far it is using entirely too much natural gas. Well I cant blame it all on the heater. the gas also runs my hot water heater, my stove top and oven. Also the antiquated bathroom heater. The bill was almost double this month but the Electricity bill was a hundred dollars less to I guess it balances out.

You know it’s cold when the closest I get to the garage is to check on the stray cat living under my rear porch. I bought the little girl a heated pad and water bowl and put together a small setup to keep the winds shielded. Right now it’s 15 deg in Elmer NJ. That said it’s supposed to be a high of 48 on Sunday. Hoping to get the bike washed on Saturday. Damn the torpedoes!

Same here in Williamstown. 16 deg or so but if feels colder with the new fallen snow.
On the subject of the stray. we done the same back in 07. Now we have her and two of the five she was pregnant with at that time.
All three now rule the house.

Outside I now have a small dog house full of cedar chips behind the shop for whatever stray comes along..... At times I have seen from possum to skunk to a stray male we call Bob, in it for shelter. They will not get the same in - house treatment but seem to like the temporary shelter in really bad weather.

More salt and calcium down on the roads , so my bikes in for another few weeks or until the rains clear that up.

I will not take my bikes out for a ride until the spring rains with thunderstorms and downpours wash all the salt and chemicals off the roads. Even taking the plastic off that stuff gets in all the nooks and crannys and also wiring and connectors. Not worth it for a quick ride. I’ll dream about riding until spring.
