Replacement Key

So Long story short, I finished rebuilding a 1989 zg1200 from a previous owner and shops "start and failure to complete" state. Ran it for 1 day and one "arround the neighboor hood" Parked it in the garage... and the only key has now disappeared (I blame my 3 toddlers I let "Ride" the motorcycle on the center stand ). Where can I find a lock/Key number? What are my options for replacement?

I recently had new keys made by a forum 'buddy' (not this forum) for a 1984 Honda based on the code (3 or 4 digit - can't remember) on the back on the helmet lock which was easily removable from the frame. A bonus was that the previously 'notchy' ignition lock, including it's integrated steering lock (which never worked) now works as smooth as butter with the new keys (the only key that I had was a copy, and possibly a copy of a copy).

If you take the fuel filler lid lock cylinder to a locksmith he can pick it open and make a new key/s based on the existing tumblers. This of course requires the filler lid to have been the same key as the ignition was.

Don't know about Kawasakis but on older Hondas, one ignition key will open the tank caps of other bikes while not working in those other bike's ignition switch.

On the 1987 and later Voyager XIIs, all 6 "non saddlebag/trunk" locks are the same key/cylinder construction when shipped from the factory. The interior wafers/tumblers are the same.

You guys are great, Thanks, I was worried that the other key cylinders were only partial or some how "dummy" keys. I will be posting a tread on my fix here soon. I need to find a image host that works smoothly from my phone. Yall would get a trip out of the broken case fix.

So I called a few lock smiths and got some conflicting information. Just to confirm what your saying . My gas locks tumbler has the same number of pins and a key made for it will work for my igntion cyl (1989 zg1200) ?

My bike came with two keys, both work in the luggage &etc, but only one works in the ignition. They're stock Kawa keys, but two different key codes. I have no idea how a PO ended up with a wrong key that still works in the bags.

provided of course the 2 cylinder locks had been the same key before, then yes. I only use the gas lid lock because it is the easiest to remove, just that sliding clip holding it in. One could always use one of the inner cowling pocket locks provided the flap was open, or a helmet lock so long as it was unlocked so one could access the screws to remove it.

Maybe. But the existing ignition key works with everything. That other key only works with the bags.

Where can I find a lock/Key number?

The dealers can look it up from the VIN. Take the title.

I got spare keys made from the key code -- some place I found in Webistan. $30 or so for two keys, and they work swell.

I would be more worried WHERE the key is. I would hate to find out at a later date that it found its way down onto the tubes of the radiator causing a leak. Or sticking out of a flat tire on the rear of the bike. Might be worth taking some lower plastic off and giving it a good looking over.

Ive removed quite a bit in the search for it. My garage has never been so clean. The wife has enjoyed the cleaning of the couch crevices and all the odd places im cleaning out.

Ive come to two conclusions, My 3yr olds have "saved" them somewhere or they fell out of my jacket pocket while riding another bike (far fetched but where the *&#%!& have they gone)

Seeing as how I havent quite gotten the beast fully road legal. havent gone through the process of getting the project in my name. I received the bike in pieces with a cracked transmission shaft boss on the engine cases. So it wasn't quite ready to be legalized until I could make sure shes a runner.

You can register it without licensing it. Cheap. And it'd suck to do that work and then find out there's a registration issue.

I suggest Pop a Lock. I have used them a few times here and they are quick professional and reasonably priced.
