AVON TIRE'S

Post by ekap1200 »

What a PIA, For years now it was a snap to get avon's to fit the voyager 1200. Today it took over an hour to look the front tire up. I hope I made the right choice on AMAZON. I started with the AVON venoms some years ago ,then they changed to avon COBRA'S ( AV71 & and AV72 ) With a speed and weight code of 74 H XL FOR THE FRONT IN TUBELESS AND AN 80H XL FOR THE REAR IN TUBELESS. All done by a friend in the bike building trade. He has now went on to just painting bikes in a new location without all the repair work and custom mod's that took up too much time. Well now having to actually look them up and order my-self ; on this old and slow PC I could not find the tires at all for the voyager. Only from reviews did I find the change in name and P/N. But from amazon it did not list the speed and weight for the front. They may loose me as a user of AVON'S . I made the order thru AMAZON still not being sure of the 74H XL and 80H XL Rating. And what a price increase those went for. So now it seems they have changed again to COBRA-CHROME, BOY that name change boosted the price up quite a bit. With the 2 tire's and 3 sets of EBC brake pads it was a tad over 400.00 USD. I hope not to be needing to make any returns and sure do miss the old day's of actually talking to a human when making such a large order. It used to be so easy, If the vendor didn't know he would just call his Avon sales rep and bingo , an answer right over the phone. Imagine that , talking on a cell-phone, looking at the younger generation I was beginning to think one could only TEXT
I wore the rear down to the point that AVON website derated the speed down to a max of 80 from 130 , but it was close to 24,000 miles and down to 0.115" A very nice mileage and with no cupping . I could not believe it myself and we looked and double checked and its been well over two years with the same set. I had known about the worn dampener and spline so my riding was soft and easy as if the wife was on the back the whole time. I have never gone so far on a tire EVER.... And I had not pulled the trailer with this set. A good thing is that the date of manufacture should be very recent since this seems to be a brand new line of tire. Good thing I started early on bike maintenance , and other than pads and tires only the caliper on the rear and the wheel's rubber dampener and spline needed to be changed out. Thanks Mike N. for the very low mileage parts for the rear wheel.
Pulling the final drive off the swing arm showed no signs of gear oil leakage and plenty of lube on the slip joint sleeve. If anyone has any more info on AVON'S new line of COBRA - CHROME TYERS , I would like to hear a review or two.

Gene, I to am looking for a different brand front tire. I have used Dunlop E3’s for years. These have been discontinued. Last year I got a Dunlop E3 130/90B 16 for my 02 with no problem . Now I can’t find that tire. I know they now have an E4 but I don’t want a Center grooved tire . So I’m spending a lot of time researching reviews on different make tires that will fit our voyagers front . I like the reviews for the pirrelli night dragon tires. I’m also wondering about the Michelin camander II . Haven’t thought about Avon. Sounds like that’s your brand. How much for a front tire ? Also looking for a softer tire for holding the road especially in rain. I know softer tires don’t wear as well but that’s ok. Front tires are easy to change. I would like to get reviews from voyager owners on different brand tires. There’s lots of reviews on the E3 on this sight but that tire is gone forever.

Hi Kim,
Over the last 20+ years I've tried the Avon venoms and cobras. They make a good products. My big complaint is traction seemed to deteriorate in colder weather. Toss in some wet and corners got scary. Warm weather & wet wasn't as bad. It also seemed the more miles on the tire, the harder the rubber compound. The best rear tire for wet weather is the nexen CT. It also handled surprisingly well. Last spring I replaced both tires due to age. I put on Dunlop E4's. Seems like a good tire, but I doubt I will wear them out. Due to degenerative disks and arthritis, I'm 2 inches shorter than I used to be. All that compression causes nerve problems which further limits riding pleasure. I'm sure someone on here will report their findings on the E4.

Kim, I ran a Michelin commander II on the front and loved it.
It seemed to handle better, might be a little softer then the E3
Also I have a friend that bought a voyager with a pirrelli on it and the only way he got rid of the wobble in the front was to get rid of the pirrelli .

I'm Happy to hear about the Avon tires. Soon after I got my Voyager 1200 back in 02 I got me a set of Avon tires. They worked in the wet and cold or heat they rode really well. My problem with the Avon tires it that they were hard to come by. So I tried the Dunlop E3s and I liked them as much. Good tire.

This summer on I 10 just east of Lordsburg, NM Trisha had a blowout on the front tire of her trike. She was riding along at 70 mph when it happened, the tire that was on the trike was an American Elite, Dunlop. I had mounted that tire new in early June 2019 right before the AVA Rally, so it had maybe 3k miles on it. The belt slipped causing a bubble on the tread of the tire, when it first happened Trisha was traveling at 75 mph, the speed limit in that part of NM. She came over the CB telling me she had a vibration at the front of the Trike. The Interstate was washboard rough, so we talked about that and her reply was she didn't think that was it so she slowed to 70 mph. At that speed the bubble on the tread of the tire grew and was rubbing on the metal brake line and the fender causing the tire to overheat and blow. No problem except that she was shaken up, and the fender and front lower cowling were broken.
The next day we got to Tucson and the dealer there only had a Dunlop E4. So now 17k later, the E4 is a wonderful tire. Trisha has ridden all sorts of roads on that tire since then, from Arizona to Alaska and back home, plus the Eastern Regional ride-in.

I put an E-4 on the front my VXII 2 years, and 12,200 miles ago.
I am very pleased with it,and have found no negative issues with the center groove, and have been on plenty of grooved roads
I do not know,at this time, what the life will be on it yet :thk:

metzler 880's used to throw rubber off the rear tire. Sure hope their new design solved that problem. Still happy with my E4's.

.... OK, the REAL test.. how are E-4s on tar snakes???!!!!!

The only thing that bothers me with the Michelin commanders
is tar snakes give me a tad of a pucker... don't know that all
tires don't do it, but had to ask.....

I think they might be a little better than the E-3s I used to run,but if I see them in time I slow down. :thk:
The road I live on seems to be a test for how much of the road can be a tar snake :rolling: I had less issue on my road with the E-4s last summer than I thought I would.
