Yellowish lines on top of carbs

Post by truckerchaz »

What r the 2 yellowish colored lines lines from the top
of the carbs on my 86 Voyager 12? They once ran back over fuel tank but r now broke off about an inch from carbs . Do I need these? I can't feel vacuum coming off of them ?

They are the float bowl atmospheric vent tubes and as such do not have perceptible vacuum. They run over the top of the lower air box and point downward to prevent any rainwater/debris from entering the float chambers while they do their job.
Their purpose is to equalize the pressure inside the chamber with that of the surrounding open air and while the engine will perform as designed without the full length being there I would not advise leaving them like that for the reason I mention. You may never have a problem with the short tubes but it isn't how they are supposed to be. The choice is yours to make: leave them as is or replace them with new 1/4" clear tubing.
I can't say if it is easy or not to replace the tubing with the carbs mounted as I always just replace them when I am rebuilding a set of carbs. There isn't much room between the continuous front rail and the 2 diaphragm housings to work in.

Thank you Dave. I will replace the lines as I still have carbs off. I was just confused as to what purpose they served. I thought maybe something was missing since it looked like lines run to nowhere. Glad to know I don't need to locate another part of the vacuum system . Chuck
