Windshield cleaner

Post by Vooshman »

What's the best way/product to clean windshields? My windshield on the vulcan is scratched up so when the sun hits it makes it difficult to see thru. Before I invest in another I would like to have a better way of cleaning it. Thx for any input.

I have been using a product called Plexus for a number of years, and am happy with it.
I shake it up,spray it on,wait a minute,and wipe it off.

I never touch mine with anything if it's dry. Always wash first, then use some plastic polish (forget which kind I have but it comes in a bottle) on the clean dry windshield. If I'm on the road.... at the end of the day I drape an old wet T-Shirt, which I keep in a sealed ziplock bag, over the windshield and use a small spay bottle to add more water to it. This will lift the bugs and dirt off so that the plastic polish can be used. Every couple of days, I wash out the old T-shirt and put it back into the bag wet .

Plexus is a product specially designed for cleaning plastics: they make a cleaner, mild polisher, and a course polisher bottle, so read the labels before you buy. Another excellent product, available freakin' everywhere, which is safe, and very effective, is Pledge Furniture Spray, Lemon formula. My old pastor/church used this to clean their Plexi-Glass acrylic podium. I keep a can in a saddlebag, or the trunk, at all times. I also use a new microfiber towel. They work perfectly, as long as they do not have any particulates stuck in them.

Pledge will remove crayon wax! It will remove dried bug guts, too, but it does require a little elbow grease. Be sure to wash your microfiber towel periodically, as the chitin (bug exoskeleton material) will accumulate in the towel. Support the back side of the windshield with your free hand, while you clean with Pledge, as the elbow grease will flex, and move, the windshield. You could end up loosening/moving the windshield, if you do not support it properly, while cleaning. Never scratched my windshield, or my helmet visors, using Pledge and a microfiber towel, in the 14 years I've been using it. No crazing of the plastic, which ammonia products will do! Pledge won't harm the plastic in any way. Cheers!

We've been doing fine so far and hope to keep it that way.

I agree and use Plexus on my windshield as well, had the same issue with my last windshield. So many spider-web scratches when the sun was low I couldn't see anything thru it! I also have used the wet t-shirt method when the windshield if full of critters after a long ride. I keep my old 2-X t's and they're big enough to drape on the windshield soaked, they stay in place and soften everything up nicely with out scratching, follow that up with the Plexus and whaalaa
:Cball clear as a crystal ball!

If your windshield is scratched, get the Plexus Polishes: start with the Course Polish flavor, first, following directions. Then hit it with the Fine Polish flavor, followed by the cleaner product. If you are replacing the windshield, you will have nothing lose, except time, and a little money on the Plexus products. You may save yourself a bundle on a replacement windshield!

I have used the Plexus Polishes, way back in the 1990's, or early 2000's. They do work, but it depends upon just how severe/deep the scratches are. Even the Course Polish is only intended for minor surface scratches -- not gouges out of the plastic. Be careful if you use a polishing attachment on a drill! Going too fast will build heat, which can further damage the plastic, and make it worse. Use slow speeds, and short amounts of time, to avoid excessive heat, damaging to the plastic.

Check this site for replacement windshield vendors. I replaced mine, several years ago, and I ordered one with a rectangular vent, factory installed. Worth every penny! Attempted to cut round holes into my old windshield, to pop in the 1970's style pop-out vents, which I bought from Craig Vetter's web site (Craig Vetter designed the infamous Windjammer Fairing, back in the early 1970's). The hole-saw tore up the plastic windshield, and... The rest is history, and water under the bridge. Cheers!
