Refrigerators in the cold

Post by Yrifreige »

I have a combo refrigerator in my garage which is unheated most of the time. I went out there today and noticed some of the food in the freezer was soft. The food was thawing out but the ice in the freezer was not thawing?? the fridge is on and working. Would these cold temperatures have something to do with this(its been 25 or under for the last 2-3 weeks in nj)? Any thoughts?

does it perhaps need defrosting?

First, let me say, I really like the name of your bike.
Now a little longer answer:
No, on the defrost. The refrigerator isn't running because the garage temp is cold enough to chill the beer (25 to 33 degrees F.) but not cold enough to keep ice cream hard (0 to -10 degrees F.).
Ice freezes at 32 degrees, anything with sugar, salt, or fat freezes at a lower temp. so it thaws before the ice does.
As long as the garage is at 25 degrees F. the refrigerator won't run the compressor and the freezer suffers.
The best solution for this scenario is to use a chest freezer for the frozen food, and let the refrigerator keep the beer cold .
By the way I have named my bike King (of the road), it rides a lot nicer then my connie but I scrape the pegs easier.
Now I need a cool pic like yours in the upper right corner and I will be set. :-D

Take care

Thanks. Little story behind the name. As I was walking up the street to meet her for the first time, the name "Gertrude" popped into my head. Then when I first saw her, and took her for a test ride, I hated her. Thought she was an overweight wallowing elephant. But I couldn't get her out of my head. So I bought her, and in the second picture I took of her, from the front, I realized she bore quite a resemblance to an elephant. So, Gertrude The Elephant. Put some air in the shocks, replaced the tires, tuned her up, used liberal amounts of seafoam, and man that elephant figured out how to dance. As I got used to her and figured out the optimum air pressure for my worn-out forks and best setting for the rear shocks, and the carbs cleared out so now she's like a gazelle. A big fat grey gazelle. Hence Gertrude The Gazelefant. Can't wait to see how the new front springs work. Going over to a friend's house (not Gene's, he's busy) to change them out.

Ride The Dragon, pay seven bucks ;-)

I've been looking at Connies; thinking of getting one (after getting rid of Geraldine The POS Shadow).
