Good Riding Weekend

Post by cushman eagle »

The nice weather over the weekend gave me the opportunity to get 255 miles on the VXII :perfect10:
I got to watch the odometer turn 92,000 miles, and she still runs as great as she did 11+ years ago when I bought her with 22,000 on it
It looks like I may have to replace my E-3 on the front before the rally. :hmm:

272 miles today according to Google Maps. 320 according to my odometer. Rainy day tomorrow, then up to Allentown with the PGR on Monday, then with the Retreads for a funeral on Wednesday, racking up the miles!

Hello from New Jersey. Weather here has been fairly good for riding, and with no room in the shop to work on things, I take the bike out for some room . Well once it is outside , it keeps calling me , :rolling: . So whats a guy supposed to do. I have been busy here in the shop mostly machine work, and wood work for the house. Next home needs a bigger shop and smaller house. The soon to be built 1200 from 3 parts bikes may be done this year. Right now there are box's of parts from 3 bikes taking up way to much space in my shop. I need to get this done for more room.
My riding friend from down in Vineland finally got around to looking into the notorious front fender issues. So going down to look at this mess , the PO that installed the trim did just what the instructions stated. ( toss them away ) Well we all know what I found. Cracked fender, and the fender was so crushed it began to close up the holes so the new inserts would not fit. I can't remember how many fenders I have seen cracked because of such a stupid little part.
Anyway It is looking like I alone may be attending the rally. I am looking at taking several vacations on the bike myself and one with a fellow rider down to the Tail OF The Dragon, for his mountain riding skills. Hopping to get to Maggy Valley and see Wheels Through Time, if the family keeps it going.
Thanks to Tony of Toledo for some help in the forklift trade. Tony runs great, parts were a pain and I ended up getting parts from a man in Fla. Some machine work to adapt new style nose seal and wiper. Piece of cake. All Good !

I'm still only good for maybe 100 clutch pulls a day. :-(
That's on the XII, which has the lightest pull of anything I own.
My fall jacked up the nerves all the way to my neck, which has kept the physical therapists busy. And the orthopod had these encouraging words: "Fractures in arthritic joints like yours never actually come back 100%."
My left hand used to be my strongest, but now that forearm is visibly atrophied. Of course, all this means is that I need more handlebar therapy.

Yes Gene,
Front fender many times is overlooked. I’ve had to replace 2 of them. One was my fault. I’ll tell you about it at the rally. Used your inserts to. Fender on my 96 was cracked so bad I had to tie it up with zip ties afraid the back side would catch on the tire. That would be bad. That was on a trip,so had to improvise. Once you get it right with your inserts you never have to worry about it again tho.

I hear you. My fender was crushed (no spacers) when I bought it, but it didn't fall apart until W Virginia roads (a thousand wonders I didn't blow a fork seal too). I bought a small Dremel on the road and cut kerfs along all the cracks (about 3-5 off each hole), then filled them with ABS cement. Also filled in where the chunk of fender was missing. This was at my at mom's house in Ohio.

And then did all again in California, cause you can't really repair this. Borrowed an in-law's Dremel.

It's still on the bike, but I got Carl's last good fender. Hope to get it painted and on this summer. (I'm working on another bike, painting the plastics white like my XII. Do all at once.)

(I just added this to the "New owners of Voyager XII" sticky -- forgot it the first time.)

Got out for my first ride of the season earlier in the week and it was the first time the bike has been started this year. Took a while to warm up, but once it did, it felt fine. Are these bikes known to be cold blooded? Didn't start to be able to get any good throttle response until the temp gauge started to move.

Mine is, a little bit. It's pretty dependent on setting the choke right. I use the Vista Cruise to keep the RPMs up a little, and then don't need so much enrichment.

PLUS 1 on Nails comment. Mine will run great cold as long as the choke is just a bit opened up but like you mentioned Mayhem8 as soon as it's warmed up close the choke and hold on!

Wow I can see people have forgotten how carbureted vehicles and chokes work LOL. When cold: full choke to start, then back off to keep rpm say 1500-2000-ish, backing choke off as engine warms up it will speed up. After about 10 seconds should idle fine at about 1500 and be drivable. By the time you've gone a few blocks you should be able to decrease choke to nothing or close to it. Might have to keep it cracked a little while to keep it idling, depending upon how cold it is. So if what you "have to do" is something similar to that, it's perfectly normal. Old cars with manual chokes were exactly the same. Automatic chokes do the same thing without your input. I would think fuel injection does kind of the same thing rather invisibly? Don't know, never owned a bike with fuel injection, and only one car, an old Datsun 260Z that just worked LOL.
