I got a new magnetic phone case and didn't want to spend a ton of money on the expensive mounting kit yet, so I unscrewed my Stem Head Cover and added some neodymium disk magnets on the cover mounting bracket. Now I can put my phone on a sturdy mounting point and use GPS!
Be careful if your tape deck works though, that much magnetic flux might affect and ruin tapes.
Here is an Imgur album of the process of installing the magnets.

VERY NICELY DONE, I mounted my old Garmin in that same location. Has been a great location for years for me.

Re: Easy Magnetic Mount Point Mod
I would recommend a tether be added to your phone, just in case. Cell phones typically sell for $1,200 - $2,000+! A hard bump and your cell could bounce off while riding.
Mechanical phone mounts are my preferred system for just this reason. That and I do not want to magnetize my phone using a strong magnetic mounting system.
Another thing to consider is that it may interfere with the electronic compass, within your phone. Not sure if they have one, but I suspect they might. A strong magnet could permanently damage any compass within a cell phone, which could interfere with your GPS system in your phone. You could test this by downloading a Compass app to your phone, to see if it still functions normally. Cheers!
