ULTRASONIC CLEANER
Well all my side work is paying off... just purchased a 1.5 gal. capacity ultrasonic for doing nice carb work. I have been wanting one ever since I heard about them. Been getting bikes to repair that have sat for YEARS.... One on the lift has a need for some carb care....O-rings just fall apart and are not cheep. But here a bit of info, McMaster Carr does carry a nice supply of various o-rings at a very nice cost.. Purchased the 3mm orings for our oil filters in a pac of 10 for less than the cost of 2 anywhere else.
On another note... my vacation is approved for the MAV ride in and I am ready. Bike has never ran better, all that was needed on the return from the rally was an oil change, and carb sync.
Note ,,, for those of ya who know of me on facebook,, please post that I am in FACEBOOK JAIL AGAIN.
GENE KAP..

Re: ULTRASONIC CLEANER
Thanks Richard, I don't find much time for the PC when I get home anyway. ON the darn PC all day at work. And the bike work keeps me busy here in the shop. Just replaced the shops AC that went out when I came home from the rally. And now just got wireless network out to the shop. So I am sitting here waiting for the timer on the sonic/cleaner to do another two carbs.. I should have bought one years ago, but just kept buying other things...
////THANKS//// FOR POSTING ON FACEBOOK. THEY can't handle the truth.
Gene

Re: ULTRASONIC CLEANER
Hello Gene;
I have also been looking at ultrasonic cleaners and if you don't mind, please allow me to ask a couple of questions which may help those of us considering one of these.
You mention 2 carbs being cleaned in your 1.5 gal unit so can you tell me the approximate inside bottom dimensions of the tank, length; width and depth?
Are you using heat and frequency or just frequency?
If you use heat as well, what degree of heat do you find works best?
How much time do you set the unit to run for?
Do you have 28 or 40 Hz ability on your unit and which setting seems to do the least cavitation and/or damage to the surface?
And finally, do you use an aluminium safe cleaning agent such as Simple Green Pro 3 or what brand name cleaner have you found to do the least surface etching/stripping.
The last question is perhaps the most pertinent for those of us not yet immersed in the science of ultrasonics as the ph level of a cleaner can have drastic effects on aluminium parts if immersed for too long a time, as I'm sure you know.
Anyway, if you get a minute perhaps you can help us make an informed decision on these questions and I am still looking for some 90/91 front of bike plastic if you have any to sell.
Happy zapping,
Dave

Re: ULTRASONIC CLEANER
Hello from NJ, the inside dimensions of the basket are 10" X 5" X 5" OR 250 X 125 X 125.... I used both heat and freq. and 32mL of the cleaner shown in the pic- FORMULA 202, for carbs and small parts. I let the heater bring it up to 70-C for about 5 min. and with one carb and four bowl in the basket , let it fun for 20 min. I did have to rinse them first before I pulled all the small parts from the body, as the carbs sat dry for nine years. Blew dry and after 15 min I shut it down and rinsed with hot tap water and blew dry then just lightly sprayed with WD.
The water for the tank has to be de-ionized or de-mineralized. If you don't have a reverse osmosis treatment for tap water a gallon can cost over 10.00 USD. The cleaner was around 66.00 USD and the unit was 137.00 USD.
It is the higher freq. unit, and it is an import. I researched several US models and the cost was triple and not in my cost-range at this time.
For being a first time user other than small jewelry units, I am very, very pleased with the results. I noticed at the schedule of time and cleaner used , no visible pitting was noticed.
As for the plastic parts, I am holding out until I have a 1200 I have been trying to build , at the least have all the parts I need to complete it
Hope this was helpful, Gene Kap

Re: ULTRASONIC CLEANER
Hello again from NJ, used 28 mL of cleaner on the remaining 3carbs and set for 40 min. The heater "I discovered " only comes on when the unit is run/timed. 28ml was much less aggressive but a little more time. Temp a 60C was about 125deg. What a time saver and well worth it , "If ya do allot of work".. Here are some more pics.
I mixed a light mix and done the front master cyl.
what a time saver.

Re: ULTRASONIC CLEANER
Yes Gene that was very helpful, thank you for that.
I am glad to hear you are enjoying the new equipment. I am going to update my own cleaning regimen as it is a pain to go see a buddy and ask him to fit me in when he is doing a run of cleaning. I like autonomy.

Re: ULTRASONIC CLEANER
Well I know how ya'll like pic's, so here are the carbs ready to be tested for fuel level. Made these stands up to make the job of holding them , right side up or upside down. Still waiting on the o-rings for the pilot screws , one was missing the washer also. Also still awaiting brake parts. Both masters were gunked/varnished / foul looking and just plain ugly. Past few bikes have also been that way.
Anyways, the cleaner tank was a very good investment .

Re: ULTRASONIC CLEANER
I've sure gotten a lot of use out of mine, even though it's only 10 X 6 X 4 inches. I've been known to turn bigger stuff over and run it again. I bet if you get one, you'll find a lot of uses for it.

Don't let Marie know you've got it, Gene, she'll be wanting to run all her jewelry through and you'll never get to use it again

Re: ULTRASONIC CLEANER
VV;
to get the bottom length for a block of carbs I would think that one needs to look at a minimum 15 liter unit; 21 liters may be even more suited for the job.
Look up vevor.ca and canadaultrasonics.com . Unfortunately vevor is sold out of the "right sizes" and the web site for Canada ultrasonics only has dimensions but no prices. I guess if one has to ask then one can't afford it?
