Gertrude Gets a Butt Lift, or, Top Box Disaster Narrowly Averted
Gertrude's top box has been loose and rattling around for a while. I knew new plastic doohickeys were needed. Visiting Gene on Sunday, he suggested just bolting the trunk down. So today I took a look at it, and one of the plastics were broken off. The slider latch assembly was really loose (plastic collars worn), and one of the plastic slider collars was broken. So I removed the metal sleeves from the plastic collars on the latch assembly and bolted it down tight. The broken slider collar I dealt with by flipping it upside down and bolting it tight. Sorry I didn't take any pictures, it didn't occur to me at the time. Anyway, so the trunk won't slide back and forth anymore, but it was really difficult to do before and I never really had a need for it to do so anyway. No more rattles, no more wiggles, no more danger of the trunk mounts breaking and the trunk coming off.

We ride 2-up, 98% of the time. We use the slide adjustment often, due to the fact that it slides forward on us, when we stop. Nice to know that if necessary, we can bolt it in full rear deployment, and never worry about it again. We have the extenders mounted, which should not affect how we bolt it into place. Heck, I'm tempted to bolt it in full-rear position, now, regardless of the state of the plastic collar bits! Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

It's not actually directly bolted into place, all the plastic bushing are still there. All I did was take the metal collars out so the plastic could be squooshed down tight. Well, and the broken slider plastic (the front one) I flipped over and installed from underneath.
I also adjusted the left saddlebag to eliminate wiggle and rattle. So it doesn't quite match up with the taillight anymore, but sheesh who can see my taillights when I only wash her a couple of times a year? lol
