Tech Tip Section has wrong info on an air filter

Post by Chris Cochran »

The Tech Tip Section gives three possible alternative air filters to work on a ZG1200. One is the WIX 46140. So, that is the one I ordered from Amazon. It fits well one way, but the other way is almost an inch short. It's not like the other ones that are a tad too large and can be trimmed down.

It's not that the tech section is wrong, it's that you didn't read everything. You have to take the paper out of the old frame and use it as an adapter, trimming the new filter slightly to fit inside the old filter's frame.

In this case I'd need to stretch the new filter out by about 0.7 inches. You can't trim what isn't there.

I can see trimming down an oversize filter to fit.

I used that filter a long time ago. You have to gut the original filter, then glue the new filter into the old filter frame.

After all that work and having a smaller surface area, I went back to the OEM filter. I found that the OEM was good for 30 to 35k. Or about two year's.

The wife authorized me to spend the extra $$ and get the OEM filter, too.

didn't I read somewhere that there is an old Chevy Camaro filter that can be trimmed down to fit? Anyone have any information on that?

In the interest of being honest, this filter actually does fit. The surrounding orange edge will fit in the white plastic frame of the old factory filter. But, the surface area of the "new" filter is smaller. So I did go with a factory, expensive filter.

I'll keep this one as an emergency filter.

Hey, when I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
