Fuel injection on ZG1200
Hi,has anyone fitted fuel injection on the 1200 ? If so, what system did they use? Last question. What is the carb spacing in mm.?

Re: Fuel injection on ZG1200
I have been looking into that.
At this point I haven't come up with a system that will be easy to retrofit and still be cost effective.

Re: Fuel injection on ZG1200
Now It may seam a little strange but I was thinking of the old zx1100 (GPz1100) system.
I know most people got rid of them because they had problems with it.
It is in fact a very easy system to work on.
If you have a ZN1300 then you know what I mean. Some may not agree with me though.
As most people got rid of the systems off there zx1100’s and fitted carbs. There must be a lot of systems lying around garages & going cheap.
With this system you only have 4 electronic items to go wrong. Engine temp sensor, Air temp sensor, TPS or ECU that’s it. The only other items are the fuel pump and the pressure reg.
Once fitted you can always change the ECU and convert the fuelling to sequential. using a Megasquirt ECU.
Anybody got a set of carbs off there 1200?
I need to know the spacing.

Re: Fuel injection on ZG1200
I was looking at them but Carl told me that they don't make any parts for them anymore.

Re: Fuel injection on ZG1200
Hi, you are right about new parts being no longer available. But most parts are on E-Bay if you look. I just got hold of a complete system off E-Bay for £150 ($213) and the guy included the engine temp sensor.
Adjustable Fuel pressure Regs are easily available.(E-Bay)
Fuel pump relay is a Bosch item. W0133-1615089
The air & engine temp sensors are only 2KΩ NTC Thermistors.
But most people don’t know that.
Also remember that this old system uses Low impedance injectors & is an analogue system. But there are a few Mod’s you can use to get the most out of it. Just do a lot of searching the net.
A few people who have fitted injection to the GTR1000 (ZG1000) & the GPZ900R (ZX900A)
With any luck I hope to start the project as soon as I get back off my holiday, but that won’t be until April.

#1-#2: 67mm C/L to C/L
#2-#3: 86mm C/L to C/L
#3-#4: 67mm C/L to C/L
Bore measures 30.6mm
Please note these are as accurate as I could measure using vernier caliper, and as such I may be off by .1-.2mm, just a quick measurement.

Hi Dave, Thanks for the info, I’ll add it to the list of data I’ve compiled for the project.

Re: Fuel injection on ZG1200
I don't mean to rain on anybody's parade, but aside from ridding yourself of the choke, what is the practical advantage of FI? From my studies, I have not found any real advantage to FI, versus carb's, other than it is all automatic, no choke necessary, and riding in mountains. My studies have shown that carb's do an incredible job, achieving virtually the same mileage as a FI system. Aside from the emissions concern, I really have not seen much advantage to FI, over carb's. I got my driver's license back in 1981, when FI systems were starting to become mainstream, and I've never seen much of a real-world advantage to them -- on older vehicles. I understand that today's engines are much higher performance, with significantly tighter tolerances, and FI is critical on them. Curious what you hope to gain by installing a FI system on an older, carbureted engine. Thanks. Cheers!

Re: Fuel injection on ZG1200
Speaking of carbs!! I have a Motion pro set of carbtunes with all the parts and have no use for them, if anyone wants them $30.00 + frt, cause I have not used them in years. Or in Fla. I will deliver for food!! within reasonable distance... pm me if interested. http://www.motionpro.com/product/08-0411" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Fuel injection on ZG1200
Hi SgtSlag, The main reason for changing to fuel injection is that I’m fed up with my carbs forever flooding. It can be OK for weeks then all of a sudden, problems.
I’ve replaced the float needle valves and it still happens. I know I should replace the carbs with another set, but over here in the UK they are like Hen’s teeth to find. The ZG1200 was never a UK model, So are few on the ground.
I also have a Zn1300 which has the DFI system fitted. Which I’m happy with.
One of the problems we have over here is that fuel contains up to around 10% Ethanol & is increasing each year. I think this may be the cause.
Leave your bike standing for any length of time and anything made of rubber rots. It’s becoming a bit of a problem with older vehicles. You have to replace all your fuel pipes & anything that comes into contact with it.
Also I just want to see if it can be done. If it doesn’t work I can always go back to carbs. Just a matter of finding a set of more modern carbs that fit.
I’ve already have a complete DFI system off a ZX1100 so Its worth a try.
I’m on holiday for a few months so nothing will happen until I get back home.
As soon as I get started I’ll keep everyone up to date.

Re: Fuel injection on ZG1200
Thanks for responding. I've got some older vehicles suffering failures from our 10% ethanol gas, as well (had a 2003 car, whose fuel gauge was failing; 2000 truck, gas gauge no longer works -- $700 part, then drop the 26-gallon tank, and replace the sensor...). We have some additives which claim to ward off the ills of alcohol in gas, but I doubt they really stop it from destroying rubber parts... Cheers!

Re: Fuel injection on ZG1200
I realize this is an older thread but has there been any progress on the project?
I was thinking about the microsquirt controller with a set of gsxr throtte bodies. There are a few years that each throttle body can be spaced to fit and then use a custom fuel rail. Not sure of the OD of the throttle bodies compared to the OD of the carbs but it might be worth looking into
