Gertrude Goes Splat

Post by GrandpaDenny »

Got in an accident today. Car turned left into me after I was most of the way past them, hitting in the left saddlebag. Impact knocked the rear wheel sideways and down we went. I got hauled off in an ambulance, fortunately the only real damage took just three stitches. As for Gertrude, I don't know how she is, or even where she is. I will investigate tomorrow.

Ouch! Wishing you a speedy recovery and hoping Gertrude is fixable. Glad to hear the damage was only a few stitches, still scary stuff though.

Thanks. I'm waiting right now for a friend to arrive to take me to see Gertrude. Fingers crossed that it's only plastics and the saddlebag frame that are damaged. I'll know shortly. I'll post pics here of course.

Damn , glad your OK. Sounds like the worst thing is you don't know Who or Where it was towed. They may have caused more damage towing it than what happened in the accident. I have seen the horrid way they drag bikes up on the tiltbacks.

Well, I found out where she's at, and went to take a look at her today. Looks like I'm going to be bike shopping. How my leg didn't get broken I just can't imagine. Good gear, sturdy boots, and legs like tree trunks, I guess. And a lot of help from Higher Power.

Whaddayatink, Gene, you got enough parts to fix her? If it wasn't for the gearshift going into the crank cover and the left side peg being missing, I think I could've driven her home LOL

And all of my gear is less than a year old. The jacket is the oldest. The helmet's about six months old, the pants two weeks, the boots a week. They did their job - all I got was three stitches and a sore back and shoulder. Nothing broken. We'll see what my doctor has to say about my back, it's pretty sore.

Another Patriot Guard Rider out in western PA got into a bike accident the same day. She wasn't wearing a helmet and got really messed up badly - head, neck and spinal injuries. Judging by the noise I heard when my helmet hit the road, I haven't any doubt at all that my head would have been busted open like a coconut if I hadn't been wearing a helmet. And looking at the relatively minor injuries I did sustain, man I'm so glad that I'm a believer in ATGATT!!!

Not exactly a tip-over. Good luck with the recovery -- you and the bike. Glad you're still walking, more-or-less.

Wow Denny, I'm so glad that you are ok (relatively speaking). Looks like Gertrude protected you as much as she could. Poor ol'gal. I hope Gene the local bike doctor can help you out, again! You and he have done wonders with her, and I hope she lives to tell the story to other bikes when parked amongst a crowd!

And seriously, how did the driver not see you if they were looking? Oh, that it, they didn't look! :tho: :gmad:

Thanks. As for parts, oh yeah, Gene Kapuszinsky (I never am sure if I'm spelling his name right so I usually just call him Gene Kap)(ekap1200) lives about an hour from me. I plan on either raiding his parts stash or adding to it. Another awesome source is Carl Leo, The King Of Voyager XIIs, down in Florida.

I don't know yet what I'm going to do with Gertrude. I can't afford to get her out of storage, and looking at the photos, I think she may be dead.
