RH Saddle bag lid 1987 voyager XII

Post by newrider1949 »

My bike is gold colored but any color ok, I can repaint. Also need hardware if possible. Realize this is not any easy part to find ...would also not mind a broken one I could repair if nobody has a complete one .

Thanks

The right side lids are still fairly common. I see them on eBay all the time, and Carl Leo usually has a stack of them. It's the left side ones that are extinct. Check with Carl Leo voyagerparts@bellsouth.net

Well I see the last one showed up on EBay in September (Dec first today) and although there is a complete RH saddlebag on there ATM, the seller has removed the lock hardware (which I also need) as well as the lighting, trim etc and listing all the bits separately ...pricing the locking hardware the same amount as he wants for the whole saddlebag ...so I'd rather not go that route and pay massive shipping for the extra base I don't need plus I don't really like to support that kind of mercenary business.

Lots of pre 1986 or 1300 lids listed on Ebay but hardly any Voyager XII lids as far as I can tell ..

I sent an email to Carl Leo a few days ago but no reply as yet.

Thanks

Larry

and here is another RH whole bag.

Yes I saw the red one but by the time I get it to Victoria Canada that US$150.00 becomes more like C$250 plus as eBay is converting US to Cad at 67cents these days...plus I have to get it painted +$$$ and then I still don't have latches or the chrome trim on the bag lid that my model sports ...so pretty big investment for a compromise.
The blue whole bag seller may not ship to Canada and if he did, he'd want a bunch for sure as he wants $50 to ship it to mainland USA, so I'll just wait a bit and see if more reasonably priced or a gold one shows up. I've only just started looking and maybe the source GrandpaDenny recommended will come through, we'll see.

Chrome trim was sold as an add on all voyager models. I think it was sold by Markland . I do not have that option on either one of my voyagers. I personally don’t like it. To hard to clean under the trim.

Thanks for the info, appreciate it. I'll try and find some to match the LH side or maybe have to plug the holes and remove LH trim?

Larry;
I looked at your bike photo and if you get a RH chrome trim piece for the saddlebag lid you will not be pleased as it appears as though that is a RH trim piece on your LH saddlebag lid. See https://amervoyassoc.org/Documents/sadd ... mrails.pdf
If you want to match what you have already for the replacement RH side bag lid you need a LH trim piece.
Previous owner installed the trim pieces in reverse for some reason.

Hey Dave not sure what you're seeing but it seems to match the drawing in the link?

The bag in the installation instructions is a RH saddlebag. The double chrome rail is beside and in front of the small glove box lid.

Sourced a complete saddlebag, red colour so I have to paint the lid. Don't need the bag itself, just the lid but did need all the hardware, lid and base hardware missing on my bike.

Bag $109USD, $50USD shipping to Washington state, WA sales tax $14.35US = $173.78US = $256.20CAD

12% BC sales tax on $109US ($160CAD) = $19.20 plus $40CAD shipping to BC from WA = $59.20CAD

Total price $315.00 Canadian. :!! :-( Next I have to get it painted .... :cry2:

Yeah, that gets pricey double-quick.

Only an idiot would've bought my POS XII, and you can find comments here lamenting not holding out for a better example. But at least it was mostly complete.

It needed lots of plastics repair (ABS cement is a god-send); and I decided right up front to de-badge and repaint the whole thing. (It looked way too much like a golf cart anyway.) So I did, using left-over paint originally for my 1986 GMC pickup.

And the very next day after putting it all back together, my saddlebag lid went all bunch-quitter on the freeway (no tethers yet). My wife was behind me trying in vein to catch up; and she told me where to look.

And there is was, caught on a curb under a guard rail after many yards of tumble. (I found most of the tools and stuff from the top-box, too.) It needed a lot of ABS surgery.

But my paint crap was still out. By the end of the next day, it was repaired, repainted, and reinstalled.

Putting it all right and stock is a good thing. But sometimes POS is a good thing too. (Since all that, we've had many miles of fun. You can find ride reports here.)

Good yarn! How do you affix a tether? Any tips?

Yeah, search on "lid tethers" here -- much previous chatter. Choose the approach you like best.
