One of the many joys of being a UU - sweats to church are not frowned upon. How's the shoulder Loren? I took a much needed shower this morning, I'm pleasantly surprised (but not that much) that the shoulder isn't more painful. Motrin and ice doing the job. I can do most things - one-handed - even mopped the bathroom floor. Putting a t-shirt on by myself was entertaining...

4-6 weeks till back to work? Wow I'm told 4-6 weeks until the start of PT, then probably 8-12 weeks of PT.

Checking in with the so-called "Senior Super Heroes". It's four days since Super Tuesday (Loren jumped the gun). We're maybe just getting past the pain phase and into the I'm-really-getting-sick-of-this phase -- often the hardest part.

For my pissant surgery I'm completely pain-free but can't sleep with cottonmouth. My nose is starting to unclog, and in a few days I'll probably be able to sleep more than 2 hours at a time. Woe is me. I'll survive.

Denny has probably gutted it out past the narcs window, patiently watching reruns until he can start PT. My shoulder surgery last year was on the same schedule as his now (mine was a kind of "rotator cuff repair"). My surgeon told me I'd have to be patient with his strung-out PT schedule. I replied that he'll never find anyone more patient than me. So-ooo much patience ... applied by the scoop shovel.

Sounds like Loren's total shoulder replacement has some up-sides recovery-wise, jumping into PT much faster than fussing with repairing our knackered shoulders. But I'm guessing that he's more disciplined and compliant than either Denny or me, too.

I suspect Scott is getting over the worst of the pain from hacking up his abdominal wall. Maybe getting up and walking around is easier by now. (Nothing like ripping the belly apart to unsettle ones balance.) Your wife is probably getting pretty handy at cracking that whip.

Recovery Road. Definitely bumping against the Fun Barrier.

No narcs at all for me. Just Motrin. In the sling the shoulder doesn't hurt hardly 'tall. Pulling it out to take a shower or just have a good scratch is a bit more painful. Ok it hurts. But taking it easy, not trying to use the arm, it's not too bad and back in the sling it's fine. I expected it to be much worse.

Next appointment is the 26th.

Loren, similar story for me from the doctor. Full removal has less compilations and quicker recovery.

Denny, hats off to Motrin and avoiding thr narc's. I've been lucky enough to to avoid mine as well and have gotten by with just Tylenol.

Nails, don't under-sell your medical issues either. I cannot imagine getting my nasal cavities reamed or nose broken/re-broken 😫. That absolutely has to come with pain and extreme discomfort.

Jesus walked the Earth in loose clothing and sandles, so if you wear sweatpants to church. You will be forgiven and anyone who judges will have to answer to the big man. Be comfortable and be you!

I can now get into & out of bed by myself! Hooray!!!!
Once up I can walk freely and mostly without any pain. Setting down and getting up (toileting) has proven to be uncomfortable but still manageable.
And Nails, my wife has been so amazing and when I thank her she just says "you did everything for me each time I got my shoulders done" (both a year apart).

I still say we are Senior Super Heros! 🩹🩼🩻

Well,1st PT was nothing more than checking range of motion in both shoulders, and strength in the left[good] shoulder.
Now the next step is for the PT to find how much therapy my insurance will cover, then start follow up appointments. :-O
The doctor did tell me I am done with the sling :woohoo:

Did your cast iron shoulder have full range of motion? If so, you might progress straight into active range of motion -- weird stuff like walking your fingers up the wall.

I just checked my calendar. I first whined about a sore shoulder in 1/23. We got the PT sorted out 2 months later; and the PT folks immediately diagnosed the severed tendon. They pushed for the MRI (5/23) to confirm it. Soon I was talking to the surgeon, and the surgery was in 6/23. (Scott, all of this was Community Care, which can take a while to schedule. I wasn't dying.)

My first post-op with the surgeon was 28 days later; and my first post-op PT appt was day 38. I don't have my PT milestones written anywhere, but I wasn't allowed to start active ROM until day 82 (early 9/23). My last ortho appt was 135 days out; and it looks like my last PT appt was the next day (both 10/23). They measured my ROM and strength to compare with what they got back in March. I passed ... and they kicked me out.

The PT was a series of passive ROM, then active ROM, and finally limited/progressive resistance. Each phase had targets, and I was able to meet the new criteria on Day One of each phase, completely pain free. But we still had to (more-or-less) screw around in that "phase" -- couldn't skip up to the next one. I mean, it wasn't me holding things up. (I was constructing the canopy over my shop's barn doors, but being mostly chill in the 3 mos after the surgery.)

I was finally allowed back in the weight room about 220 days after surgery (1/24); and two weeks later was taking that shoulder to muscle failure. Then I threw my crutches to the floor outside my surgeon's door -- I WAS CURED!!! He did a great job.

About 6 mos after that, the hernias reared their hoary heads. I haven't made it back to the gym since -- 7 months and counting. (And still working on that damn canopy -- hope to finally get the metal roof on next week.)

I just started taking the sling off for short periods of time. Small pendulum movements are pain-free. Know what hurts the worst by far? Putting the sling back on!

First time I went through PT with the young lady who has become my absolute go-to therapist it didn't take her long to label me an 'overachiever'. I knew my knee was good when I maxed out the machine. That was my goal LOL.

Given my specific shoulder surgery, the greatest initial risk was in moving my elbow away from my ribs or rotating my lower arm away from my abdomen (this per the discharging nurse). The sling was just trying to keep all stress off those parts "held together by a thread", giving that tendon a chance to grow back onto that bone enough to take me to actual therapy. That therapy would start with venturing into greater movement. Not to sound too righteous about it, I periodically took the sling off way too soon and walked around without it -- at least initially supported by my other arm to where it would be if I left the damn sling on like I was supposed to. I don't think that specific tendon bore any weight of my hanging arm.

One side of my nose has opened enough to breath through so I don't wake up with cottonmouth. I'm finally able to sleep right. This pissant nose job disrupted my sleep more than the shoulder surgery did. Too early to say, but I'm hoping this surgery will get me off the CPAP, which was prescribed less than a year ago.

I notice that this thread has gotten five thousand views. I apologize for for all this blather that doesn't mention XII at all. As a deliberate hijack: I'm deciding whether to pick up a disassembled 1982 CX500 later today. It would be my fifth (count them) CX/GL Silverwing. Two of them are GLs, which I aspire to mod into a touring bike to replace my XII. Much smaller (they are the 500cc model, but I have a 673 to swap in) and a couple hundred pounds lighter; and I want to downsize all the crap I tote anyway. I'm more concerned about vibration than power, but I don't really know what to expect. I'll have enough spare parts to make a couple brat/cafe/street-tracker bikes for local strafing. If this works, I'll give my XII to a friend. If it doesn't, I'll just keep it. As if I needed another chore.

My next bike will be either another VXII, a Concours 1000, or a Gold Wing 1800 ('06-'10).

Yeah, I'm wanting to downsize ... and generally get off the superslab. There's a more'n fair chance I'll keep my XII -- I haven't ridden in it about two years, after all.
But it's also true that there's more pretty girls than one. Now that the shop's canopy is finally being finished, I'm torn between ripping into the XII or these Silverwings.
