Extra lights ???

Post by Jalmar »

It's getting darker here in the north. And I need more light on the Voyager.

I'm going to mount two ekstra high beam lamps. One on each side under the head light. I'm going to use a wire directly from the battery to a relay with a 15A fuse between the battery and the relay. And then one wire from the relay out the each lamp. Each lamp has a 55W H3-bulb.

The laws here in Norway says that extra high beam lamps have to be turned on by the same switch as the main high beam. So I need a place where I can connect a wire from the high beam switch to the relay.

Does anyone know where I should connect the "relay-trigger-wire" so that the extra lamps lights together with the main high beam light? :hmm:

Edit: I went out to my garage and looked at the bike, and I don't think I can mount the lights where I want to. Here is a pivture of my old Z650 with the extra lights:

I wanted to mount them like this on the Voyager too. But I don't think I can. It's to little space between the front fender and the lights when the suspention is pushed down.

I guess that I have to use the front crashbars. Then I could use some bigger lights too. But maybe the light will be bad if I mount them so low on the bike?

Any suggestions? :hmm:

click this link> http://www.cyclegadgets.com/products/li ... it=CG-VGER Purchase the bracket. I have one on our Voyager, works really good. Mount your lights on it. Easy to install.

Thank you Mike.

That was a nice way to solve the problem. Looks fine, and the lights get out of the way and still high on the bike. And it looks like something I could make myself in my garage... :hmm:

I know of a couple of folks that made their own, and it worked out ok. This bracket mounts using the 2 screws to the front under the headlight. These screws hold the plastic ring that goes around the headlight. Using a bracket mounted like shown, I would think it would look almost like the extra lights on your z 650. Under the Voyager at the link I gave you is a click section that shows more pictures of how the bracket is mounted, just in case you didn't notice it. If you do end up making a bracket, let us know, and let us see it. Always nice to see what Voyager owners can do,,, If you need sizes or lengths, for bends, I can take a picture of mine as mounted with a ruler along side for an idea of where the bends are. Again, good luck....

I made a light bar very inexpensively.

Here are photos of what I did on my Concours. I made one for the Voyager at the same time with an identical set of lights.

http://good-times.webshots.com/album/55 ... good-times

Only difference was that I didn't need the long bolts because you can use the nuts under the fairing (IIRC the ones for the headlight bezel) to bolt into.

On the Voyager I even went to the trouble to paint the square tube black.

I really should get pics up for the Voyager but the pics I have should give you enough to do it yourself.

Found an aluminium thing that I could use in the garbage. I love to use things that has been thrown away.

It was easy to make it fit, but now I don't know if I should let the lights hang under the tube or stand over the tube. :hmm:

:hmm: Always wondered why many go looking for more light instead of simply using what's already installed on the bike. I've seen several folks install additional lights, only to discover that their final result doesn't work as well as using both the hi and lo beams together. :bat:

Yes, that's importent. And the front fender. That's why I had to mount the lights so far out at each side. Now I have plenty room for the forktubes and the fender when the suspention is down and rhe wheel is on max turn. :-D

I'm going to post a "how to" when I get back from my next journey.

I'll try to take some pictures out on the road to show you why. :-D With two extra lights you almost get daylight 4-500 meters in front of you, and out on the sides of the road. Very nice this time of year in this deer and moose country.

Eek, Moose!! Holy moly, I would hate to see one of those in the road in front of me. Whats a moose weigh, 1,200 pounds or more. It would be like hitting a Clydesdale. Well, maybe not, they weigh in around 2200 pounds, however, I would quit riding at night or early morning. Wow, a Moose....

I have the ligthbar that they sell at Cycle Gadgets and really like it. I would recommend using a set of PIAA lights. When I wired mine, I ran a 12 guage wire and fuse link directly from the battery to a 30 amp relay and then to the switch and connected the switch to the auxilary power wire under the headlight. If they require you to have your lights on with the high beam you just need to remember to flip the swtich with your highbeam switch.

I connected the "relay trigger wire" to the high beam wire behind the main light. That way the extra lights goes on with the high beam, and you want need an extra switch for the lights.

Use a SPDT Center Off switch with your lights. One way can trigger the lights with the high beams, and the other can turn the lights on at will. Then you can also turn the lights off when you need high beams and are riding slowly, and won't kill the battery.

Try a 55/100 headlight bulb as well.
