History (When will I ever need to know this stuff?)

Here's a nice brief history of Harley bikes being made in their factory. I only give you one pic, but if you click on the link you can see several more interesting shots of how they WERE made. (I hope the link works!)

I want to remind everyone who has the Discovery Channel. On September 5 they will be airing a 3 part mini series airing over 3 consecutive nights entitled Harley and the Davidsons, the story of how the Motor Company came to be. I don't own a Harley but I will be watching every episode.

Thanks for that post Bruce  Our AVA Asheville N.C. rally led us to a visit to the "wheels thru time museum" gave me a appreciation of the HD history....... I would like to return there sometime soon and revisit that museum and spend a bit more time there......

I'm thinking that the HD museum in WI. would like to get their hands on ALL of the stuff that Dale has in his museum there in Maggie Valley N.C. very impressive collection !

Tony, come for a visit and we can go have a tour of the local Harley factory here in KC.
I've never been a big fan of Harleys, but one of our neighbors' sons has a really nice looking, and sounding one. My old girlfriend's father was a retired cop and Harley flat track racer. He set up a lathe in his garage to do repairs on the heads after guys would push valves into pistons. he farmed out the welding, but then would rework the valve pockets and guides. For a while I did a lot of his welding. He became quite well known for his work.
I can't understand why I'm not riding one myself since I seem to have been surrounded by them my whole life, even having owned an old Army 45 when in high school. Still, the Harley history does fascinate me.

After watching the first two episodes...was sure hoping for more, than this big build-up to this viewing disappointment :-(
would rather watch a documentary of just facts, than this batch of bad actors ! :-( :corn: :tired:

Lucas I dont know what you were looking for but it shed a lot of light on what these men were up against trying to bring a motorcycle to market and battle the unscrupulous CEO of Indian to get there. I too have never been a big fan of Harley Davidson but I now have a respect for them that I never had before. Looking forward to the last 2 hours tonight.

"...batch of bad actors"

I noticed in the very beginning of the first episode when they were listing the actors' names one stood out for me. "Bug Hall". He played the part of Alfalfa in the "Little Rascals" movie. Of course he was just a kid then, and I haven't heard of him in anything else since then.

I never knew that the company started with stolen goods!

I'm with you, Tony. I would rather watch a factual documentary. Some of the equipment and action scenes are interesting to watch, though.
