Got my XII back on the road

Post by GlockPointer »

Had a leaky fuel line between the filter and pump and after looking at it I decided to pull the carbs so I could have some room to work.
I got the special shaped fuel line from MK as well as some clips and filter and vacuum line.
also thought I should clean the contacts on the pump while it was out.
For some reason I had a jet holder on one carb that was different than the others so I pulled a matching one from the og spare carbs. ( they were all the same)
So I get this nightmare wrapped up and it starts quickly and seems to run even better than ever, honest injun.
I go out at 530pm for the shakedown run and I get an opening to take a right onto the highway so I need to hustle.
And I did.
And the back tire lights up like I'm in oil or something.
The back end kicks all the way to left lock and then all the way to right lock and i'm looking for a soft spot on the pavement to land and the rear end kicks all the way to the left again and I manage to roll out of the throttle finally and somehow rode it out.
I would like to tell you I looked like ricky gadson but it was more like lou Costello, felt like I was riding a steer.
So yeah, the bike runs all right.

So if I understand you, you intentionally threw the bike rear end left and right?

Hello from NJ. (" i'm looking for a soft spot on the pavement to land " ) I have yet to find a spot on the pavement like that..... Not long after I bought the voyager and the first time I had it out in a slight drizzle I was following a jeep on a country road leading up to an intersection of a state highway. As we approached the stop sign , as soon as the jeep's brake lights came on it done a 360 and right thru the intersection it went.... Well I knew I was in trouble .... as I tapped the rear brake I went sideways . Put both feet down and gunned it into a front yard , not wanting to go into the intersection. I just barely managed to keep it up . There was an officer across the intersection still filling out paper work on a accident at the intersection . There was just enough anti-freeze on the road surface to make it a most dangerous condition with the small amount of rain that had began. Dirt bike skills are most desirable out on the road....
The officer then called the fire dept to come hose the road down as it was just a drizzle and not enough to wash the coolant off the intersection. The driver of the jeep took a time out and sat there for a while......

Back in 1993 I needed a part for my pickup at the local Pep Boys so I decided to run to the store on my 3 month old Electra Glide. It had just stopped raining . I came to an intersection of a 4 lane road and tapped the brakes and first the rear locked so I let off then I squeezed too hard on the front and locked it and let off. By this time I knew I was going to hit the rear of the car stopped for the light, luckily I looked to my left and saw the car to my left yielding to me. I changed lanes and was able to stop before cresting the intersection. Turned my head back and thanked the kind driver now behind me. Rookie mistakes. I learned proper wet handling techniques in a hurry after that day. We all get lucky sometimes. Glad your OK
