rear speaker mounts and NJ roads

Post by ekap1200 »

Well with over 100 K on the old girl the speaker mounts on the rear finally are all shot..... Went for a ride with the stepson last weekend on the worst roads I have been on in quite some time.. We left from our home and headed out towards LAKEHURST NJ, AND looking for a back road route to avoid the traffic we hit every poor road in NJ. Pot holes in the road so bad we would have been been better riding thru the woods...... When I finally realized my son was attempting to get me to pull over I seen the speaker was dangling on the side of the trunk lid by the wire harness. :-( I had the vision of a damaged lid and didn't even want to look when I got off the bike. 5 miles of hanging on the side of the lid. Sure enough it looked scuffed up pretty bad.. Not wanting to damage the finish on the speaker it was an easy task to just remove the back rest and bag the speaker up. Well as soon as we done that 10 min. job it started to rain and I was totally bummed out. BUT having some really good luck with this bike , on returning home wet and cold I hit the area with what I have been using now for the past few years as a polish, [ MOTHERS SPRAY WAX ] I was amazed it cleaned right up with no signs of going thru the clear coat. 'What a great polish, that a good friend had recommended , Space age polymer , this guy told me. really tough. Unlike paste wax it seems to be protection from scuffing and has a nice shine to it. SO now to find some mounts. Checking out the other side they too had just about come apart also. With the cold and nasty week ahead of me here it was time to do something better , first set of mounts lasted 50k and this time I had, had it with these poor mounts . Cost some 32 USD at Lowes in all stainless hardware and made up six new parts on the water-jet using 0.105 thick steel . This will be the end of worrying about these and removing the speaker out on the road was a simple matter with just a 10mm wrench to gain access to the wire. Sure did save the paint on the speaker rather than using plastic ties to hold it in place, ( pics to follow up when done ) .... A rather time consuming job but should prove to be a much needed revision to this common issue while still giving the speaker some rubber mounting rebound from the lovely NJ roads. Gee did I just say that, they are some words that don't go well together ( ie. Lovely and NJ roads )

:-D Clear skies in Jersey today but a bit too chilly for me to ride.. Perhaps tomorrow I will get some more miles in before winter sets in for good. One can't predict when its time to put the bike down for the season here in NJ , the weather goes from cold and damp to sunny and in the 80's. But what ever weather I get , these speakers are no longer an issue....
