New Addition (Temporary) To The Family

Post by GrandpaDenny »

Picking up a $200 '83 Honda VT500C Shadow tomorrow. From the same guy I bought Gertrude from. I'm not keeping the Shadow, it's a flip. Hence the name, "Flip". Should be fun to fix up.

Congrats on the find and purchase. Yes, sounds like a fun project, provided you don't have to do much to get it on the road again. That size would be great for around town and weekend rides out of the city, where you want something lighter and easier to tool around it.

In the same class of bike, my 1987 Suzuki LS650 Savage was a blast. I rode that even to Chama and into Colorado 8 hours away, to El Paso and Panhandle TX, and in Arizona - parts of the Navajo Reservation, too. I was riding closer to red line at 5,200 RPM at 75 mph jaunts on I-40, US-84 and I-25, (redline 6,500 RPM) but it was all fun.

Once you get into it, please post some photos of your progress.

Well, I'm kind of almost done with her already, except for the bodywork. Didn't need much of anything, just cleaned the ground cable and put in a new battery. Runs like a champ! Got the tires on order, should be here in a couple of days. New mirrors and levers and brake master cylinder on the way too. Here's a couple of pics of the girls together (my apologies if I've posted them already). Geraldine has a seat cover on her (full cover on the way); the seat underneath is fine, a cloth seat. Could probably use a dyeing.

Good looking bike, that Honda, has the UJM (universal Japanese motorcycle) look to it just like my '87 Savage. Should be a real smooth rider, too.

One I was particularly interested in is the late Kawasaki 500LTD Vulcan. Uses a detuned Ninja engine, but you hardly see them now used for sale these days. The ones I saw had a bit more wear and tear than for my tastes. It was the last of the same class as your Honda.
