Saddlebag Lid Rails

Post by NY-Rider »

Has anyone been able to use saddlebag lid rails to mount lightweight soft bags without cracking the top of the panniers on a 1700? I'm looking for ways to increase the luggage carrying capacity for long-distance 2-up touring. For trips longer than a week, my wife and I need more storage. We both work remotely so it's two laptops, other work stuff, tools, and clothing. We're not minimalist travelers. If the saddlebag lid rails could be used to strap down Aerostich waterproof side zip bags (6"x26"x6"), with about 5 lbs of clothing, or other lightweight items, that would be enough. I understand that the lid rails were not intended for this type of use, but would appreciate hearing from anyone who has mounted saddlebag lid rails, and has used them to strap down bags. Unfortunately, I have no space to store a trailer (I live in NYC). Thank you.
