I think I figured out what's wrong with the AM radio on my Voyager. I took the whip antenna off the back, unscrewed the little, chrome nut that holds the cable assembly into the chrome mount and tried to remove the cable. Of course, I couldn't because it's a pretty tight fit with a 90 degree angle built into the cable itself.
Anyway, I decided to leave it alone and put it all back together. As I tightened the chrome nut back up, the I heard the AM radio hissing (it didn't before). It was on a local station. I began screwing the black, plastic fixture onto the thread stem and the readio station started coming in kind of weak. As I continued tightening the black plastic assembly, it felt as though something inside the assembly was spinning because it wouldn't tighten down snug. As I tried to tighten it with my hand, I lost the station again.
I think this at least tells me that the radio is working. It sounds like it's something in that connection back there.
There doesn't look to be any way to take this apart. As soon as I noticed some crimps in the outside metal cover, I stopped playing around with it and put it back together.
Maybe I should just replace this whole cable assembly?
Any other thoughts?
I did have one idea. I though about leaving the whip antenna alone (by the way, I don't have a CB radio) and buy an internal antenna that I could hook up to the radio and just lay the radio wire part in the fairing.
Another funny thing, the FM radio works fine even when the whip antenna was disconnected.
