bearing removal

Post by jre258 in SoDak »

Help, while changing the rear tire, I noticed that the wheel bearings were feeling a little rough, then I couldn't turn them at all. Now how do you get them out? :bat: There's no way to get to the back side of either one. Any suggestions will be appreciated

You need to remove any oil seals and the circlip(s) holding in the bearings. Then I would take an old small diameter pipe or socket extension, insert it on the opposite end of the wheel to remove the other side bearing. Move the spacer between the two bearings a little off to the side with this pipe or extension. Place the pipe or extension on the inside or center of the old bearing, and begin to tap it out moving around the diameter of the bearing while doing this. It should come out without too much trouble.

A little heat will help also. Use a hair dryer or a heat gun on low setting. Before installing the new bearing put it in the freezer overnight and heat the hub first with hair dryer. Bearing will go into place much easier, less risk of damage than by driving with hammer or pressing it in.
