Re: best route from Missoula to Boise
If you truly are not in a hurry and can take two days, I highly recommend taking Hwy 12 WEST all the way to Clarkston,WA, pick up Washington Hwy 129 south/Oregon Hwy 3 to Joseph. You get Lolo Pass and Rattlesnake Grade, the latter was repaved last August and is excellent. Spend the night in Joseph. If camping, Wallowa Lake State Park is highly recommended (reservations advisable.) Ride the gondola to the top of the mountain above Wallowa Lake for outstanding views.
South and East from Joseph with a stop at Hells Canyon Overlook. It's 518 miles and 12 hours of riding according to Google Maps, (which I find is generally conservative on their time estimates) but outstanding motorcycle riding! You could even do a side trip up to Hells Canyon Dam.

Re: best route from Missoula to Boise
I have to agree with this. Have been on both roads, on different occasions. The route from Lolo to Lewiston was really beautiful and fun to ride. From Lewiston to Boise I traveled heading north. Really good route to take it at a leisurely pace so you can take in the scenery, also.

Re: best route from Missoula to Boise
Have to agree with Bill O concerning the Lolo Pass route. Several years Char and I rode the Pass from Missoula west and could not believe the scenery. The road had been recently re paved and presented the smoothest ride we can remember. The fall weather presented millions of diamonds in the morning sun because of the light dew covering everything. We rubber necked the entire ride and thought we were in heaven all the way through. What a wonderful ride. We will never forget the experience of "Good Times."

In June of 2002 a buddy and I went through Lolo Pass from west to east and the pines on top of the pass were covered with snow from top to bottom, what a beautiful sight that was.

We came up frome Jerome Id. 75 to 93 a few years ago. Very nice ride, Lost trail pass. You may be limited on places to stay south of Salmon tell you get down around Sun Valley. We took 2 days Jerome to Priest River Id
