Speaker issue - Help!

Post by ninjarob »

Last day of vacation so I took the Voyager out today for a ride. About half way the left fairing speaker starting sounding awful, cracking on bass and kind of snowy(?) on treble. Seemed to get worse with engine revs. Stopped to check it out, by smacking the fairing a bit on that side (left) I could cause BOTH left speakers (front AND back) to quit working. Stopped at the Kawi shop but no one had time to check it today, made an appointment for next Saturday.

Took it right home and took apart the left speaker assembly, all wires were in place but still, a good smack on the fairing and no left side sound! Checked all the wires I could reach from the speaker access hole and all looked okay and were plugged tight. Got a reaction once while bending the ipod audio adapter wires but couldn't replicate it again. Now I am at the point where it works at the moment, hitting the fairing has no reaction at the moment but have yet to take her out for a test drive.

Any thoughts or ideas on this one? Anyone ever have any similar issues with either the left or right speakers? I am a moderate wrench but the thought of removing the fairing gives leaves me cold, I am hoping to possible trace this with any access areas I can get to.

Hey Rob, don't have any fear taking apart the fairing if you have the service manual. It is pretty straight forward. You can see in one of my posts where I stripped down the bike to do a full service.

As far as the speaker sounds, I did have an issue with my iPod Nano at one point and got what you described. When I played FM radio I had no issues. I figured I got some moisture in the compartment because it did go away.

Does yours act up only with the iPod?
