motorcycle prices

Post by Charles L. »

My ride is a 97 Voyager, still running great [thankfully]. Second one, had an 86, after all these years, still such a good touring bike. Maybe the greatest bargain on the road. Both my sons are Gold Wing guys, and one just purchased a brand new 2014 Wing. What can i say, it is a beauty, has everything, BUT, and this is quite a big "BUT", the thing costs the same as a really nice well equipped new car. I like my motorcycling as much as anyone, but if i'm getting in the neighborhood of between twenty five and thirty thousand dollars, i'll take the car, thank you very much !

Have to agree. My wife wants a newer touring bike in several years' time. Me, I want to keep riding our '93 Voyager XII. I just don't see a good enough reason to upgrade. I would rather spend that money on upkeep of what we have (minimal $$), and use the rest to fund our trips.

We test rode a 2009 Wing... Hated it. It was so damn heavy -- yes, it was well balanced, but I had to maneuver all of that mass in a couple of parking lots, and it was like moving a whale (didn't know how to use the Reverse gear, as the salesman neglected to show me that). I just don't like riding such a massive bike, no matter how well it handles, no matter the power, because in the parking lot, the only "power", is what I have to man-handle it around. No thanks. YMMV. Cheers!

All new bikes are overpriced. Wings, Harleys, Victory etc etc. I'll never buy new.

Charles I too agree! I bought my 2003 Voyager in 2008 for $6500 and it only had 4800 miles on it. It's a great bike!!

Hmmm, When I rode my brother's 06 Wing, I thought it handled like a dream compared to the 1200 Voyager. It felt small & lite riding it. I zipped around on it and had a blast. The handling & power was unreal.
If I could afford one, I'd own one

Hi Everyone,
Just my two cents, I had a 90' Wing I liked the way it handled on the
Highway. We took it to North Carolina 2 times. From NY to S.C. I now
Have a 95 Voyager. Both are nice bikes, Both have there strong points
And there weak points. I bough both of them used. Neither of them
Were not even close to the price of a new car! I believe in maintaining
What I ride and saving the money for the trips I take in the summer.
A brand new bike would be nice just can not see spending that kind of money.

Bought mine used at least 5 years ago. Best $5750 I ever spent. Yeah I too spend some times at motorcycle dealerships. Was at a Harley Dealership the other weekend. Nice gorgeous machines. I just can't see them $27,000 gorgeous. Especially when you think that they don't go down the road any better than my Voyager with all the shock and spring mods I did to it. The music doesn't sound THAT much better than mine. The scenery still goes by just as sweet and that spring air doesn't cost a thing more on mine than that one. Best of all I am not stuck looking at a hole in my retirement account or a huge deficit in my checking account every month. And ya know? The other bikers of all makes still give you the same bottom side wave as you pass um. :wnk2:

"Bottom side wave", I like that Mr. Jennsee, looks like you're getting ready to pat some pedestrian lady on the rump as you ride by.
Folks always waved at each other with their arm raised up. That's still fine by me.

I know the price of a new bike is very high compared to a car. But 2 things to think about are.

1 Can you have as much fun or see the great USA IN a new car as well as you can ON a new bike.

2 The reason bike prices are so high are a variety of things. The R/D on a new bike is just as much as involved. The tooling is very expensive. If my numbers are correct there was about 15 million Dollars alone spent on just the motor of the 1700 and that was just the motor and along the way there were many changes that were made before the bike hit the market. The number of cars that are made is far higher than that of bikes. It takes alot of bike sales to recover that cost and being that the numbers are not that great it takes along time with the high cost. and that is why you see models stay mostly the same for many years. 1986 to 2003 for the Voyager XII and you look at many other the Concours Goldwings Harleys and others. I was very blessed to be a small part of the 1700 Voyager and it opened my eyes. I too had those thoughts as to why are they so expensive to buy.
