Fork seals
Does anyone have a recommendation for a fork seal/wiper? I'm about to rebuild the front end and this is a new bike to me.
Also, I see the manual calls for 20W/40 for the fork oil. Is that the general recommendation for fork oil?

Re: Fork seals
I rebuilt 4 sets of forks and used All Balls oil and dust seals in all of them and had no problem.
As for the oil I used 7w and 10w fork oil but I just changed out the oil in my forks and used
Dextron II Transmission fluid, it a 10w oil and a lot cheaper then fork oil.

Re: Fork seals
I picked me up a couple of these to try out. After reading the data and reviewed comments from others, I think this is a good tool. Those needing to fix leaking fork seals should give this a try.

Re: Fork seals
Hi Bill. let us know how you make out with these, sounds like it will work good if its just debris stuck in-between the seal and the tube. And the price is rightBill O wrote:I picked me up a couple of these to try out. After reading the data and reviewed comments from others, I think this is a good tool. Re: Fork seals
I had a fork seal leaking about 3 weeks ago. I seen this tool and decided to make one of my own to see if it was just dirt in there or if the seal went bad, which they are only 3 years old. Anyways,I took one of those round handi-wipe containers, cut it similar to the same shape as the seal mate tool, ran it between the fork and the seal itself and it hasn't leaked since.I did buy some neoprene fork protectors to put around them to keep the bugs and debris of the forks.

Re: Fork seals
Thanks for all the tips. :) So, 4 months later, the project is finally under way.
I'm confused. I have the fork nearly disassembled but I can't get the inner tube to come out of the outer tube. I have successfully removed the allen screw from the bottom of the fork and the dampener from the top. What is causing it to hang up still?

Re: Fork seals
There is a snap ring under the black dust seal that needs to come out.
The cager waving at you might just be a frustrated, fellow biker.

Re: Fork seals
I've got the snap ring and dust seal off too. Still no luck. It feels like something is hanging on the inner tube.

Re: Fork seals
The upper bushing is pressed in.
You have to keep extending the inner tube out agents them until they are tapped out, that will remove the seal and bushing.

Can you explain in more detail? Do I just pull the inner tube out repeatedly against the seals until it all pops it out?
