Tip for plastic repair with a soldering iron

Post by Pbpd183 »

Here is a video showing how to repair plastic with a soldering iron

I practiced on a trash can lid and litter box before trying. IT WORKS GREAT

Here is a picture of my repair

If it was more visible, I could sand and clean up a little. But the plastic is just as strong as original. Might help with those out there with broken tabs.

Have fun!

I used that method and it works well, I also found that ABS pipe cement works vary well also.
another is the clear liquid acrylic / polycarbonate cement.

Haven't tried the soldering iron method, but I have used the ABS Glue method, with great success. Just an FYI: the ABS Glue is actually ABS plastic, suspended in a solvent -- when the solvent evaporates, the plastic is left behind, welding the pieces together; it is viscous (thick liquid), but relatively inexpensive, at around $8-$10 for a can of black, at your local hardware store. Same concept, different method -- whichever method works for you. Cheers!

1st: Caution about the fumes, either method.
2nd: You might add cleats (cross pieces of metal or plastic), underneath, where the greatest stress is (if room).

Also, what is the roll of material your melting in, and where did you get it?
Thanks,
Ken

I just used scrap plastic from an old power port cover. Black zipties can be used also. On the repair in the photo, I didn't use any filler.
