Voyager XII vs 1200 Wing

Post by Chris near Kansas City »

Had several discussions at the rally regarding the reasons for Kawasaki painting over the lower rear fender light as well as the center of the trunk light due to Honda laying claim to design infringement. Or something along those lines. I said I'd post some pics when I got home, and just now remembered to do it. You tell me. Did Honda have a case?

Yes they do look a lot alike.
Maybe that's why Kawasaki locked up there designs so tight that nobody could make aftermarket parts.
At least on the 1700's you can get some aftermarket bling designed specifically for it.

I always have to do a double take when I see a 1200 GW rolling down the road to do the quick checklist because they do look very similar at highway speed from 75 yards away. The headlight and turn signal configuration are usually the first thing I look for, then the fairing lowers. From behind, they're really close, especially since I've taken the painted pieces off of the trunk and rear fender and replaced them with the lights.

I do agree that they aren't identical, but they very easily could be sisters. Of course, the Voyager would be the hotter of the two.

Ironic that back in the 80's the wife and I bought a pair of Honda CMT200T so we could get the family involved in what was my lifelong passion that I had given up after my brother was seriously injured riding my Yamaha 180 in the early 70's. My father in law for some reason decided he needed a bike so he bought that 1200 Goldwing in the stardust gold. You cannot imagine how envious I was of him. Especially since he loved to show us up riding down a highway. Back then we rode side by side. I figured one of these days I'd get me one. Time passed and I went on to bigger bikes than the little Hondas and forgot all about that. Now I have the Voyager sitting in my garage and does look better than that GW did. Yeah, it's indeed irony.

The first thing I look for, is to see if there are valve covers sticking out the sides,if yes,it is a Honda,if no a VXII. :corn:

I bought an 84 Aspencade new way back when. It's handling, braking & overall highway manners were exceptional. After kids came along, it just didn't get used, so I left road riding for several years. When the time came to buy, I didn't like the pricing on used wings. Research brought me to the vxii. It is so easy to work on compared to the wing. It gets better mileage and has never left me on the side of the road. I can't say that about the wing. I was in a road rally and had just passed a broke down Harley. I laughed out loud. Two miles later I was on the side of the road with a fried alternator. I haven't laughed at anyone's misfortunes since.

A friend had an '82 Wing. I rode it once -- didn't care for it, seemed to wander on the road, for some reason. Test drove a 2008/9 Wing, 1800cc engine... Felt like I was pushing the Titanic, in the parking lot at the dealership... Hated it! Incredible power, handled decent at speed, but in a parking lot? Forget about it!

I love my Voyager XII -- I know it is far from perfect, but it is very nice, and it is paid for, in great working order, and needs only routine maintenance. Could not ask for more -- with my budget. Not into farkles, but I do like items which make the ride more comfortable and safe.

Chrome does not interest me. My buddy with the '82 Wing suffered Chrome-itis, could not get enough chrome on that bike... Then he wrecked it, and now he has a pile of chrome bits to sell off. :-( Cheers!
