progressive fork springs upgrade + how much oil

Post by ratiug »

Recently had gotten a 95 XII and I am putting in Progressive fork springs , I am not removing forks, after removing clip I found there were already progressive springs installed but whoever did it had reinstalled the collar and brass filter and only left out the steel sleeve. Since I already have them I will install the new springs using just the plug and clip.
Am I correct that each fork tube gets 11.9 oz. Of fork oil?
The previous owner (ie 2nd owner) when I asked about fork oil say he never did it . He had the bike 6 years and only put on about 2800 miles . Also if anyone wants used progressive springs , make an offer.
Thanks
Also where's the best place to Jack the bike to get the front tire off the ground?

Yes, 11.9 ounces for 87-2003 models. Be sure to use a small air pump to drain all the old oil

I put a small 2 x 4 across the front part of the motor and use a floor jack. Tire only has to be off the ground a few inches

I followed the instructions that came with the Progressive springs. In my 2001 XII, I used a narrow tape measure and locked the tape at 160mm (a touch over 6.25-in). I poured the oil in before touching the end of the tape, then pumped the strut up and down about a dozen times, to get the air out of the chambers. Then I topped it off until oil just touched the tape end.

After work was done, I did a ride out in the country side. Wow, the ride was much smoother, I'm really going to enjoy these springs. They also restored the height of the bike, now it is much easier to put the bike on center stand. I didn't measure the length of the old springs, but imagine that being 14 years old, they may have lost some height in the process.

I also posted some tech tips on saving money by improvising special tools to remove fork cap, replace the fork seals and cover in thread:
