Lock those saddlebag lids!
Every so often, I read where someone looses their saddlebag lids , usually resulting in at least some nasty scratches, or the destruction of the lid. Needless to say, like most everything motorcycle anymore, these lids are anything but cheap to replace (about $700 each the last I heard ). So, an obvious tip in helping to keep these lids on your bag, and off the road, is to lock the latches (both) before and during any riding you do. Otherwise, the lid latches have the habit of sometimes popping open when you hit a large or even small bump on the road, and your lid goes sailing down the highway much to your dismay. Many have also attached their lids to the saddlebags by various methods usually using a thin cable or other tie material. This is a fairly well known trick for veteran Voyager riders, but may be unknown to the newer owners.

I have to lock the trunk too. If I don't, the latches open and the next thing I know, I'm getting bonked in the back by the lid when I brake for a stop. :)

Didn't know you could do stoppies on Voyagers! Just kidding, but that is one thing I never had problems with the trip trunk unlatching, but would be obviously possible, and already happened to you. I have seen a very few latches that were bent slightly, and this would cause premature opening, so that might be something to keep in mind or check.bresna wrote:I have to lock the trunk too. Re: Lock those saddlebag lids!
Most of the nuts that hold the latches on the bike were loose on mine after 1800 miles. That or they were not tight at the factory. Anyway. I took them all off and put some blue lock tight on them and tightened them up. No problems after that.
Re: Lock those saddlebag lids!
I lock trunk and saddle bag lids at all times since I've had a trunk latch pop open more than once. Thankfully only one popped, the other stayed. It can happen on really bumpy roads.
I'm working now on tethers for the lids in case I forget to lock them, and so I don't have to have them perched precariously on the seat while accessing the saddlebags.
Edited 8/8/2008 - tethers have been in place about a month now and give me real peace of mind. I really like not having to worry about a removed lid when stopped. Always worried about knocking them off and scratching them.
