Question about a leaking oil seal.
OK everyone, been enjoying riding the Voyager to work this week, but I have had an oil leak on the starboard side and I hadn't tracked down EXACTLY where it was coming from...until today!
Bummer, this engine barely has over 2600 miles on it, but I guess sitting for all those years, didn't fair to well with this seal!?
Here is the Microfiche for the '00 XII...
Part #92049A
It goes behind # 21007
Question, has anyone ever changed this...WITHOUT splitting the case, is it possible!?

Re: Question about a leaking oil seal.
Give Carl Leo a call, He would be the one to know about that seal, 731-413-8666, or voyagerparts@bellsouth.net , I have never seen or heard of that seal going out but anything is possible.

Re: Question about a leaking oil seal.
I think I may call Carl, if not just met the guy and chat!
It does seem odd that the seal went bad, but...this engine(2000 XII) had 2453 miles on it, the bike was wrecked and it sat until now, when I found another '00 and swapped the engines. So, that seal may have been sitting, dry, I don't know if the oil sits that high or not?
Now all of a sudden, the engines running and the oil is getting hot!
I'm thinking that's what caused the thing to fail?
I'm just hoping I can get it swapped, this "Harley" thing is driving me crazy!

Re: Question about a leaking oil seal.
Just a question, how much oil do you have in the engine? if over 3 qts 22 oz can cause a leak and a lifter tap. Just wondering. And did you pull BOTH oil drains and the filter when changing the oil ?

Re: Question about a leaking oil seal.
k7nutN7nut you definately need to call Carl. I just put my engine back to gether a few weeks ago and if I'm not mistaking that seal has a lip that requires you seperating the halves of the engine to put on. Hope I'm wrong but even if I'm not maybe Carl has another suggestion. Best of luck..........Gator Mike

Yes, I did pull both plugs and the filter, but, as for 3Q 22oz?gearheadfla wrote:Just a question, how much oil do you have in the engine? if over 3 qts 22 oz can cause a leak and a lifter tap. Just wondering. And did you pull BOTH oil drains and the filter when changing the oil ?
I don't know?
The manual I think said 3.5 quarts with oil filter change and 4 quarts from "dry"?
When I do the next change, I will be VERY meticulous in adding the oil...but I need to replace that seal, regardless. I don't like having a "leak"!

Re: Question about a leaking oil seal.
The manual says 3.5 liters which converts to 3qt 22oz. Without a filter change it's 3.2 liters which is 3qt 12oz.

Well, I did give Carl a call...What a heck of a nice guy, caught him fishing when I ask him all those questions!
Did what he said, but I uncorked the crankcase breather and, drained both drain plugs overnite, then poured out 20 oz. of oil from my gallon jug and put that in...still leaking!
Oh well, guess I'm gunna have to live with it, not pulling the engine back out and tearing it down, but wish I could.
He says that seal, you have to split the case to replace it!
Also, he says the XII loves Rotella-T, great, now my KLR and Voyager will get the same blood!

Re: Question about a leaking oil seal.
Well, an update...for those who have not been able to sleep, worrying about MY oil leak!
I did talk to Carl, he told me how the Rotor, pulsing Coil comes off the end of the Crankshaft. I took the smallest "standard" screw driver I had and as I turned around the crankshaft, I got it under the seal and with the flashlight, it looked as though at the bottom of the seal, it was "rolled", that's where the oil was weeping out. After going around with the screwdriver, I checked the perimeter again, looked like the roll was gone?
I road down the driveway & back, idled for a couple minutes, no leak yet...but the real test will be the ride to work in an hour from now!?
Please let it be "leak free"!

Re: Question about a leaking oil seal.
Oh Thank God, now I can stop drinking all the Alka Seltzers. Glad to hear the the Wizard Carl could help, see I told you he can fix a XII with mental wave links across the country. All kidding aside, that's the beauty of being in this family, no matter what we manage to break, someone here has been there done that and got the T- shirt.

That's great news. Really hope that all is well now. I'm firmly convinced if Carl can't fix it then it's not worth fixing. ......Gator Mike

Re: Question about a leaking oil seal.
Jim, see, you get my point...Man, all you guys waiting, worrying and not sleeping, I'm just SOOOOO glad it was Alka Seltzers and not "kool-Aid", I couldn't live with THAT on my conscience!gearheadfla wrote:Oh Thank God, now I can stop drinking all the Alka Seltzers.
OK, this is what went down...figuratively of course. Before, when I arrive to work on my 40 mile ride, I get the XII backed in, on the center stand and by the time I get my gloves and hat off, I step around to the Starboard side, there's already 2-3 drops of oil on the ground! Well, today I arrive blah blah blah, no oil on the ground, I wipe the wires coming out of the pick up coil area, yes, wet with oil...not much, normally it was a drip hanging there, waiting for some buddies so they could drop together, but today, just damp with oil!
OK, so not perfect, but a far cry from what it has been. Now tomorrow, after I get up, I'll pull the cover again and see how much oil is behind it, after running it for a good 80 miles?
The other thing I was think'n...I know I know, dangerous, but, this engine had only 2453 miles on it before the original owner "low sided" it, which means...I mean I'm assuming, he had it serviced at the Stealership during break in!?
Now wouldn't a mechanic notice oil oozing out from under that engine cover?
Or how about the owner!?
I tell you what, when I was having Portland Motorcycle do the first service check ups on my '89 GSXR 1100, I would have noticed oil oozing out from somewhere and raised holy heck about it!
I really think it's unlikely that seal got that "roll" in it from the accident...but then anything's possible...right?
Just wondering...
OK, so to recap, people, people, please STOP worrying about my oil leak, get some sleep and thanks for the support!

Re: Question about a leaking oil seal.
OK, I couldn't wait...it was about 1AM, but the tools were on the "roll away" awaiting me to check anyway?
I pulled the cover off, not 1 drop of oil to be found OUTSIDE of the Crankcase!
All I can say, is Praise God! I was bummed about leaving a "Harley" calling card everywhere I went!?
Somehow, that seal had a "roll" on the bottom of it?

Aw gee...All you had to do was cover up the Kawasaki labels with Harley Davidson stickers and they would have accepted you as their ownk7nutN7nut wrote:OK, I couldn't wait...it was about 1AM, but the tools were on the "roll away" awaiting me to check anyway?
