Fairing Buzz/Rattle

Post by EVAHank »

I have a 2010 VV 1700 with about 7800 miles on it. I recently completed a 2400-mile cross-country trip, and I have noticed that my fairing is rattling a lot, and seems to 'buzz' at certain speeds/rpms.
I'm also concerned about the windshield mount, at higher speeds it seems to place a lot of stress on the pod containing the radio and gauges. Has anyone else had this problem, and is there a fix for it?
Any information/observations would be appreciated! Thanks.

When I had mine, I had to tighten the screws on top of the dash a couple times. I believe there are two of them. That quieted everything down. No problems with the windshield mount that I noticed. Also some have had a vibration of the nacelle around the ignition switch. When you notice the buzz, try pressing on that nacelle or the top of the dash to see if that quiets things down.

Hey Hank. When I took my fairing apart to service the steering head bearings, I noticed that the gauge cluster fasteners were a little loose. Also the plastic chrome rings around the gauges vibrated a little so I glued them. The windshield and inner and outer fairing are fastened to an internal frame so the windshield should not be putting stress on the inner fairing.

Hey Hank;
This is the other Hank. I too, have recently developed a buzz on my '09 VV1700. Tell me, does it go away when you pull in the clutch? Mine does. (At first, I thought it was the wife, but turning off the intercom did not make the buzz go away). Seems to only present itself when the bike is under load. This started during our trek across the US to the Logan AVA rally.

I know this I an old post but I just saw it today. Almost 90% of the time that rattle is the chrome tank bib around the filler cap. Mine was starting when I hit around 2700 RPM.s. I was sure it was coming from the fairing but noooo. Take it off and put some sticky back insulation tape under the length of the bib. Noise gone! I have not experienced the lose gauge rings in the dash but I know that can cause the same problem. :thmup:

Actually, in my case, it was that chromed plastic cover on the bottom of the top box, both sides rattle, haven't had the time to take seat off and tighten the screws.

I had the same problem on my 2010 1700 voyager , i found it was the chrome gas tank piece ,, the front of it is so thin it vibrates ,, i took mine off and coated the back of it with a layer of potting to stiffen it up,, no more noise.

Mine rattles from the right glove box area of the fairing. if I press on the plastic around the lid, or on the inside of the fairing by the triple tree, the noise goes away. I haven't yet got around to looking at it- I did check the screws for the glove box and the speaker- they were tight.

I found the source of my "BUZZ". It's the lower shutter. I put a 2-inch long piece of 3/4 by 3/4-inch heavy duty sticky-back foam under the shutter just in front of the pivot mount. This will push up on the shutter in open or closed positions :thmup: and keep it from BUZZING.
