What a great summer-like weekend here in Toledo ! (finally) So ...after work friday ,I stopped at the club,sat down, and started chatting with a long time acquaintance ...".mark"........he began to tell me of the passing of his 82 year old uncle, and the great times that was had deer hunting in southern ohio. He also knows about my passion for metric bikes and told me about his "uncle bob's" honda something..... not really sure what it was....... but that it was really old .........OF COURSE ..mark has my complete attention at this point !So I made arrangement to go to the house the next day at noon to dig out a Honda something buried under a old guy's lifetime of "stuff" that had accumulated in his garage.......I spotted a glimpse of the treasure and started diggin ! At this point all I know for sure is that it is white.......... and old.....(for a honda) Once all other stuff was cleared out, I tried to roll her out to get a look, the drive chain was heavily rusted and both tires were flat..... at this point
"mark" tells me that the bike has been in that same spot in the garage since 1980 !



I offered a hundo for it, at was told... not enough !!! I put a 50 on top of that
and was still NOT able to get her till I made it 2 hundo..... you see this little sweety is a time capsule to me.... that was about ready to get loaded into the back of me old grey Dodge and head to the shop

I asked what was the purpose of that homemade thing mounted in between the handle bars ,,and was told that it was "uncle bob's" gun mount, and if you guys look closely you will see the added bonus tucked under the seat strap ,is the original owners manual !!!!!

What you all are lookin at is a 1965, S 65 cc bike with 5000. miles/bought new
and one owner,with original paint ! Look at the only changes made, was the installation of a large rear sprocket ,and a knobby rear tire..The deer in southern ohio must have been in FEAR to see this beast comin .....I got her back to the shop , and aired -up the tires. and within minutes had the piston broke free

Oh yeah ,,,I have to go back next saturday and go thru ga-jillion boxes of "uncle bob's"stuff to find the carb and little curved intake manifold, that was removed.
If I cant find it; one of my trail 70's is gonna get robbed .

Tony that is amazing , 1965 65cc was the first motorcycle I ever owned. My Grandmother bought it for me in 67 with about the same mileage on it. I ran that thing to death in the woods of south Jersey. Until one day the rod opened up the crankcase... Hope to see it running soon as you get a carb for it... wow can you say selenium rectifier. No diodes on this pup.

Hey Tony , thanks for the shirt, fits like a glove. I have rebuilt my share of Continental engines in my day. Tow motors are no mystery to me, but I don't miss workin on them

When I saw this Honda it brought back many memories of my youth. It is what got me interested in electronics, and mechanics, I remember looking at the selenium rectifier and wanting so bad to know what the hell it was, how it worked , what it was made from , and how it kept the battery from going dead. Back then we had to go to a ( Library ) to ( read a book ) . Imagine that , books instead of a smart phone. So 60's , Got my first lesson in welding from a neighbors father welding a rack for the bike so I could pack it for camping. We all worked on our own bikes and we were never indoors, Unless you were sick you were out the door. Got any rotary valve engines in your collection ?

My family had one of those, as well, back in the early 70's. All four of us kids rode it. My parents even took it to the neighboring town, 20 miles away, two up! Hard to imagine them riding one of these oh-so-powerful bikes two up, for any distance... Brings back memories, though. Thanks for sharing! Best of luck in resurrecting this beast! most of whom, thought ur polish (small p ) job was CHROME ! !.
I'm glad to hear ,the shirt "fits like a glove" I only order XL..... and that seems to be a hit with ALL that wears them !I'm told by half of my clients.....that their wives grab em and wear em as night shirts ! and ask for another one cause they're NOT gettin the first one BACK !

Another WOW ...is the mention of the "continental "industrial engine !
DUDE ! ! (your kinda DATING yourself now ! !).....You know I have been a forklift mechanic for a LONG time now.... and am pleasantly surprised , when I respond to a service call and SEE one ! ! I own many lifts and still have a 74 Hyster w/one under the hood , and has NEVER failed to start !

As for your mention of " LIBRARY " ........I had the greatest dad ever, who taught me from the git go.... to read up on what your about to do...BEFORE...you do it !
I won't post a picture of my library area...... .....but let's just say, that PAM is pleased that we have 3 bathrooms in our house !

Your other mention of "being indoors" back in the 60's, that was my mothers ONLY way of punishment, for me ! We were outdoors , "hands on all day,everyday.
and perhaps.... that's why today's youth,don't know what end of a screwdriver to hold on to !!! They sit in front of a video game TOO MUCH !!

The 65 S has been semi cleaned now...... Not much will happen to her this year of 2014,,,, but got runnin......... then it will be taken into my basement workshop ( because of it's small size ) and be completely disassembled ,
cleaned , and made to look as good as it can without spendin alot of $$$ on it !
In the summer of 2015 it will emerge ,from the sub-level of my home, lookin a whole lot different ! guess I'm gettin a bit long winded here .......

Awesome to hear that your family had one of these "back in the day" I remember a guy older than me in the neighborhood , that had a paper route, got a brand new one by saving his 12 bucks a week, for ever, to make it happen ! The first time I saw that up-swept chromed out exhaust I WAS HOOKED

As far as your other mention of ridin these INDESTRUCTiBLE bikes..way too far'''too often (everyday)
I remember me and my older brother used to ride these bikes....MUD... caked.
till you could'nt even SEE a cooling fin on the engine. what a unbelievable A$$

The Honda 65 was a popular bike in my neighborhood in the mid sixties. I don't remember ever seeing that front fender on any of them. The one I remember was a flared plastic one. The most popular color around these parts was black. A pretty indestructible little bike.

till this saturday, till "mark gets back in town , to go rummaging thru
"uncle bob's" garage....... as I have come to learn that not only ,do I stand a GOOD chance at recovering the carb..... but also the stock front fender, that was taken off due to it's "hunting usage" in the hills of so.OH. that mud build-up nessecitated it's removal Oh well, what are ya gonna do ? ?....tony

Gee, I wish I had pictures of my '65 Honda 50cc. I remember it looked just like yours but I think mine was red. It also looks set up like mine (out in Washington state in 1970-71). I had a knobby on the back and a big rear sprocket also (at least that looks like what you have). In 1st gear you could walk faster than it. I had to ride it off road only (ok, a few times on back roads to get to the "off-road" part).
I really don't recall what happened to it. Odds are I either sold it, or it went to a family friend (???). Heh, I was only 14 at the time.

O.K........sometime has past since the last installment in the "little sweety" story.
Seems as the decades past,boxes got moved here and there, and the ones most important to me got raided I was told as the plot thickened that Mark's brother,tried to build a snowmobile type thing many years ago, and when that failed .... the carb and intake manifold were junked. After alot of searching, the day was not a total loss. I never had one of this particular model, but apparently it had a enclosed drive chain. The two piece cover was located, and also found ,was the original rear sprocket. Would have been great to locate the original front fender, but that apparently is also wishful thinking. Ebay and swap meets might get me what I need, but as mentioned, this project has to wait it.s turn. Here is a pic of what I found........................tony

Lucus if it will be any help, she can run again. Today the small honda 50 and 60cc and aftermarket dirt bike knock offs still use that simple little carburetor. And... I bet dollars to donuts that IF you scoured Ebay long enough, a plastic flared fender will show up.

Hello Mr.Jensee. I swiped a intake and carb off of a trail 70 back in May, swished out the tank a few times, re-gained spark, and she fired right up and after awhile came to a nice idle. After that I took her for a short spin, and to the shed she went. There to stay till I have more time to start the disassembly.........tony

I'm a little late to this topic, but long ago (late 60's) I had one of the Honda "presser" trail 90's. Got it as payment for some work I did for a guy. It didn't run, but just needed a new piston and to have the cylinder walls cleaned off. I also had a Yamaha 350 at the time so never paid much attention to the 90 after getting it back in shape. Those pressed-frame Hondas always fascinated me and it seems they have recently become popular to "chop". Sorry, no pics of mine! Didn't have any kind of camera back then, yet!

Seems I, too, am one of Tony's disciples (4th definition of the word!).

Hello to all of my fellow Voyagers ! Picking back up on this ol' story ........ Having completed most work on my last two resto projects ,it was time to get the ol' Honda s 65 pushed up from one of the out buildings and into the main workshop for it's turn on the air lift ! She must be taken all the way down to "bare bones" and the big pile of parts will go thru the cleaning process and then put in primer. My final paint won't be done for a month or so.... till winter is over. The plastic parts on the bike were in decent shape ,but some of the pieces were cracked here and there....and I used me ol' school soldering iron on the back sides of each piece to fuse the cracks back together ,then follow that up with a nice coat of 2 part epoxy. I think the plastics of those early days (1960's) were lacking the refinements in "plastics technology" later made....and cracked easier. I have been watching e-bay for a original front fender lately and the only one two show up is this junker in terrible condition.

The beginning of yet another long project can seem endless at times,but if ya get started on it....then put in a hour our two most days after work...then more time on the weekend, things take shape at a pretty rapid rate ! and before ya know it ....your done ! ..........Tony

Hi,Tony ,I know all about a long project with my experiences with my Cushman I have learned that when you say the restoration is completed,the bike might have other ideas and want more attention.

Lucas, have you tried this site for parts for the 65S? I see they don't have the front fender in stock but you can leave an alert for when one becomes available.

The site isn't in the USA (Netherlands) but I am sure if you NEED the part enough they would ship it to you. Good luck with it. I hope you can completely restore it. I remember seeing these bikes only in one color, black. Interesting to see it in white.

The black one that was on ebay "offered for sale" @ around $2000. apparently did not sell ,and time expired.also saw a red one a while back.
